I hate questions that invite moving the goalposts all over the place. Define the location of the goalposts FIRST, then apply people's accomplishments to the definition.

What is "World Class?"
Let’s say top 8 at Olympic / world. World athletics profiles show top 8 so I’ll say that’s the cutoff

You all have a very different definition of world class than I do. So the number of world class athletes in (either kind of) football can't even fill out a starting 11?
Even if you want to equate a track event to a position in a team sport, you would still be saying that most pros on the top level of these sports aren't world class.
Or does distance running get fewer "world class" athletes than team sports do, despite the fact that there are few events in any sport that more people have tried/trained for/trained seriously for than running the 5k?

I agree.
Are the top eight in the Olympics "World Class"? For sure.
But I put the bar a lot lower.
Olympic qualifiers.
World Championship qualifiers.
Top ten in any major marathon.
If the athlete is from a country in which making the Olympic or World team is incredibly difficult (America in the 400 meters), you can be World Class if you are invited to Diamond League meets.
My point is that we should establish the goal posts first, but even that is pretty hard.

I agree with you mostly. It’s just that there’s so little money in track, I view world class as actually contending for medals. Football is much different
There’s at least a couple US soccer players who most would consider world-class, Pulisic being the easiest example. Honestly his standing in the soccer world is rather similar to Cranny’s in distance running - one of the very best Americans, but merely very good compared to those at the absolute top of the sport. And I doubt any global football fan would take umbrage at describing Pulisic as a world-class player.
Pulisic is not world class. Too good for MLS, but not good enough otherwise. Except for a couple of teams, Serie A is where careers go to die.
She posted in instagram about getting her ass kicked and it being embarrassing and humbling.
Most people can relate to being mid-training, not feeling your best and racing horribly. It happens to pros too. In a typical season, you can just scratch an early season race if you feel bad. Unfortunately for Elise, she is locked into this league.
Hoping for her to turn stuff around it the next 4 weeks!
her performance at The Ten is when this happened. after a great indoor season I think she expected to ride that wave and hit the standard at The Ten then move right into Grand Slam. But she missed the standard and now has that hovering over her.
I think she'll work thru it, though, she's resilient.
she should have skipped GST and instead been the headliner at the save the 10,000
Editor's note: After this story was published, it was learned that Barrett Dahl apparently impersonated his father Mike Dahl in numerous phone interviews and email exchanges with The Durango Herald. C...
Illogical. She finishes around top 10 in 2 olympics and 2 worlds. That is world class I would assume?
Frankly, if you even go to Worlds you are world class.
Zero global medals.
So top 10 in the whole world is not world class in something? I think we have a definition issue. She is world class if she was in the olympics at all.

If you only consider top 3 at the olympics i would say that is "elite" or the "best ever". Hardly anyone would call world class only the podium. That's just a reason to disrespect someone.

I agree she is world class but part of what makes this an interesting discussion to me is that the gap between her and say the top 5 is quite large. At her best, she isn't going to come close to beating the best when they are near their best. If you take the 10th best soccer player, I don't think the gap is quite that large.
