Based on results, 2023 was the exception for her not the norm, it’s the only time she’s gone sub 2:23:59 in a world major. She did go 2:23:18 at worlds in 2022. Meanwhile, podium times have dropped significantly and she hasn’t kept pace, to the point where she’s not a serious contender to podium in world class events. She will struggle to make a US team again as well given the recent performances of other US women. She’s still in the mix but not a clear favorite. There’s no shame in being a 2:23-2:26 marathoner, nobody discounts that. But saying you’re - threat to win at this point or run sub 2:20 is kind of a joke and that’s why we’re all here, with our one brain cell, questioning that decision by her.
Jesus Christ - I don't have a horse in the race with her, but the people who have used this post to go after her on everything but the kitchen sink and attack her looks are truly why this board's reputation is so trash. Is she someone whose influence is now exceeding her competitive ranking? I'm sure it is - this is why one great performance on a big stage can get you a lot of money in that world. So fine - if you hate her for that and want to revel in her failures while also denigrating the women who beat her as drug cheats, congrats on being so right about what a loser she is. I just don't get why the personal attacks are also in bounds here - looks are in the eye of the beholder and to me, they don't have a place in a discussion about an athlete's performance. Then again, some of you also think it's cool to speculate about the eating disorders and mental health of high school girls, so I guess this is just par for the course.
Her looks were brought into this by thirsty incel fanbois
It definitely isn't unique to Emma. In other sports, athletes are better at acknowledging that performing at the highest level is difficult and that there are worthy competitors trying to do the same etc. etc. Pro runners tend to be pretty black and white about "I'm the best and if I lose it's because I'm hurt/sick." I think it would be healthy if they could frame it as "I did my best but it's really hard to win." It's especially ridiculous because they don't know their competitors' training. How could you possibly know you're ready to win a major marathon?
Obviously, Emma and others know this. I just don't get why they have to do the false confidence thing every time out.
I don’t think enough people are talking about this comment here. I have been following pro running now for a few years so for sure relatively new but holy smokes it is excuse city with these people. Don’t get me wrong, I could never come close to any of these times and have loads of respect for all these pros but is it normal for these people to just always go with the “I got sick during training” like good lord it’s wild how much you hear that or read it in an Instagram post. I totally agree with this commenter if they were like, “yo this elite running is hard and it wasn’t my day” would go a long way.
You all need to chill with the Emma Bates hate. Also the random Scott Fauble hate lol. It’s un-American to hate on top Americans. Where is your patriotism! I suspect you all are Russian bots.
I swear some of you must have either been born last year or never paid attention to Marathons before. Does no one remember Emma Bates leading Boston in 2023 into Mile 23 and 24? Why does she think she can do it? Because she almost f-ing did 2 years ago, heck I was watching then stunned thinking she may do it too, it was one of the most amazing performances I've seen, and now when she returns to the same course to race 2 of the 4 women she was in that lead pack with, why tf wouldn't she think if she's fitter that she could once again push them to the line?
Shame on you lot for so readily sh*****g on a great American marathoner.
She was dropped at about 2:09:30 into the race. She had well over 2 miles to go at that point.
Congrats on lying. She was only 4secs adrift at 40K and 8secs adrift at 25.2Miles
Honestly I think she is a nice person but in EVERY single pre-race interview in recent years she talkes about how she's ready to run sub 2:20 or ready to win etc. I think its just part of her own confidence building. But after announcing a big breakthrough so many times and not delivering many people start to not take her very serious. A bit of humbleness would serve her well in terms of PR.
Did you all watch her flotrack workout. A lot of forced positivity, no confidence, doubt.
I think she doesn’t have that edge anymore. Granted this is her third act since becoming a pro.
she’s fast but doesn’t truly believe
To be fair, in that interview the OP posted, she said that she thought she was in 2:21-2:22 fitness for the Boston course, and in years past that has won it. Obviously, that level of performance wasn't a factor this year, so neither was she.

Welcome to the Divided States of America. Division and hatred generate clicks, votes and profit. Good for capitalism.

She was dropped at about 2:09:30 into the race. She had well over 2 miles to go at that point. There were 4 women she was with and she couldn't handle the pace. It's NOT a dis, it's reality.
She couldn't answer the bell in the last round. Look at what the top women do know in the last few miles. They are dropping close to 5 minute flat pace. If you can't get away from there before that happens, you're toast.
She ran well, but she wasn't winning that race as she doesn't have the leg speed to go with that kind of pace late in a marathon. Her 5000 pr is exactly 5 minute pace!
Get quicker or accept it.
It's really just this ^. If she ever wins a major she would have already had to drop her competition with a few miles to go and that is just not going to happen anymore. They were dipping under 5 near the end which is incredible.

What a big miscalculation on Joe's part. He mocks the sport with his ignorance.

Joe’s a decent coach, has coached Olympians other than his wife. Gotten Gabi Jennings close to teams. He’s not a world-class coach getting his non-Emma athletes on the podium.
Listen “Peepskeets.” Her job as a professional runner is to sell products. She has almost 150K IG followers. The winner of the race has 20K. If you were part of a company looking to sponsor an athlete, who would you pick?

The one on SportsCenter. 150K is a pimple and IG is dying on the vine.
