so true. i hit pubmed every 6 months or so looking for new articles. the only good thing about kennedy, goucher, rupp and other higher profile runners being diagnosed is that the docs who treat them are likely to start talking. One of the reasons i chime in on every thyroid post is in the hopes that someone just might log in one day loooking for a dissertation topic in the area of thyroid hormone function in hypothyroid distance runners.

My thoughts on a study design would be to match hypothyroid distance runners with age, sex, and ability matched normal controls. Get baseline TSH and T3. Now have both groups increase their distance by x percent over the next 2 months and measure both of these every 2 weeks or so. I hypothesize that the hypo runners T3 will decrease and TSH will increase week to week while the normals will remain the same.

Is it possible his thyroid problem is simply a 'product' of overtraining? Just a temporary problem? I don't believe there's a single 'test' for overtraining, but given his symptoms (fatigue, pneumonia!) the first solution should be rest. If this doesn't help, then he should have gone to be checked out for any number of conditions. I know they're saying they think it's genetic, but how would they know? Did they do a genetic test? Sure, if he's producing low thyroid hormone, it may help, short term, to take exogenous TH. But long term-- it is a major concern to take a hormone, unless they know for sure he has a thyroid problem that is NOT simply the product of overtraining.

But..... You could play with these hormones to be extra thin. That in itself should be illegal in Sport. Being extra thin would help you run faster.

A female marathoner in the 80s had this and before diagnosed ran a mile for time in 7:20 (HR = 200). She had run low 2:30s in the olympic Trials just 4 months earlier. Once they found the problem she received medication and made the next Olympic Team in the marathon. o it leaves you feeling terrible, but also can be attended to

I would think that they probably tried the rest before flying all over the country to figure out another problem. That's just a guess though.

Effects of thyroid hormones on the production of erythropoietin (Epo) were investigated in isolated perfused rat kidneys and in the human hepatoma cell line, HepG2. Epo protein was measured by radioimmunoassay. L-triiodothyronine and L-thyroxine stimulated hypoxia-induced Epo formation both in the kidney and in HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent fashion. Quantitation of Epo mRNA by competitive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) showed that hypoxic HepG2 cells had three-fold higher Epo messenger RNA levels when treated with thyroid hormones for 3 hours. Measurements of oxygen consumption revealed that this effect was not due to an increase in the degree of hypoxia. Thus, apart from the known direct effect on erythroid precursors, thyroid hormones appear to stimulate erythropoiesis by a noncalorigenic increase in Epo production.

I've heard this and when i was diagnosed, i had thought 'boy, i'm going to loose some weight' but that never happened.

i think it depends on how much the thyroid slows down. if you are really in tune to your eating and your thryroid just slows down production, you may not be that hungry so you stop eating as much and loose weight. once you get on meds, your appetite increases a bit so you eat more.

but, if it's really functioning poorly and have a sky high TSH when diagnosed, you gain weight no matter of what you do.

one of the side effects of hypothyroidism is that you don't metabolize fat. this means that your cholesterol gets too high and this is dangerous over the long term.

OK coward, you're very convincing. Now take credit for your anonymous claim, by stating your name. You're doing your best to dig up research, dirt and slander, and I think you'd back up your credibility by putting yourself out there for the kind of attack your launching.

Fast American runners beware!!! If you dare run exceptional, you will be held guilty until proven innocent. The jury (an anonymous collection of seething numbskulls) will utilize a vast database (consisting of google searches and hypothetical theories) to cross reference all possible connections and correlations that could connect the runner to cheating. And that will be the final word. The best advise for those considering running really, really fast...... stay slower.

Unless these guys are proven to be guilty of cheating, they are not guilty of cheating. They are only guilty of running as well as you wish you could.

His HUGE drop off in performance would indicate that something is significantly wrong. I don't see how you can label the guy a drug cheat for a taking something to relieve a medical problem(much like Lance).

Certainly possible! Marion Jones could have only been buying vitamins at Balco too. Look at the circumstantial evidence in Jones' case. I agree that anything is possible. But isn't this at least the 2nd time that he has needed to take medication for a "medical condition" and continued to race through it? And isn't it possible that his huge dropoff in performance was the result of not taking any PEDs at that time period? When your coach has a very shady past, it just makes you wonder about all sorts of things.

With all honesty, I do not think that Goucher or Rupp knowingly cheat; however, it could certainly be the case that S@lazar is pushing the limit of what is legal.
