I think it would be great to use a fake name that's obviously not yours. For example, a Scandinavian name if you're black, an East African or Arabic name if you're white.

I once entered a race as Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, thinking I was being funny. When I finished, I was handed an index card, told to write my name and age and turn it in at the table. It was quite tough remembering how to spell that name.
The Bush twins ran a big 10k road race last weekend under fake names, for security reasons. They could have been a little more creative than "Sarah and Emily Jackson" though...
There was an African dude running for a D1 school a long time ago who used to run under the name "John Challenger" when he was running money races...

Actually, I think you are right that John Challenger(not Mark Champion) was the name he used when he won the Charlotte 10k.
I'm pretty sure he didn't get the money and he didn't try it again.
I'm surprised we havent heard anything from the Horsecow guys of UCDavis. They had a team of guys who ran cross and didnt run track or didnt make the team. They always had pretty creative names which usually corresponded to their nicknames on the team. It appears the davis website archives dont go back to the horsecow days but my personal favorite was a man Fats Tooley who entered numerous races for team horsecow. I'm sure some of them are reading this and can elaborate on other names.
