"she's loving him with that body...I just know it."
Rick Springfield, "Jessie's Girl"
Also from the Smiths:
"When you say it's gonna happen now,
what exactly do you mean?
See I've already waited too long,
and all my hope is gone."
Then there's always NIN songs like "The Wretched"
"Just a reflection
Just a glimpse
Just a little reminder
Of all the what abouts
And all the might have beens
Could have beens
Another day
Some other way
But not another reason to continue
And now you’re one of us
The wretched
The hopes and prays
The better days
The far aways
Forget it
It didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to, did it
Now you know
This is what it feels like"
"Everybody have fun tonight. Everybody Wang Chung tonight."
BOb Dylan "It's all over now Baby Blue
You must leave now, take what you need, you think will last.
But whatever you wish to keep, you better grab it fast.
Yonder stands your orphan with his gun,
Crying like a fire in the sun.
Look out the saints are comin' through
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.
The highway is for gamblers, better use your sense.
Take what you have gathered from coincidence.
The empty-handed painter from your streets
Is drawing crazy patterns on your sheets.
This sky, too, is folding under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.
All your seasick sailors, they are rowing home.
All your reindeer armies, are all going home.
The lover who just walked out your door
Has taken all his blankets from the floor.
The carpet, too, is moving under you
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.
Leave your stepping stones behind, something calls for you.
Forget the dead you've left, they will not follow you.
The vagabond who's rapping at your door
Is standing in the clothes that you once wore.
Strike another match, go start anew
And it's all over now, Baby Blue.
"I love you"
I agree with the two others who dropped Final Cut references. That's got to be one of the heaviest, most depressing albums out there. Explores the very real effects of war on a man. Good call.
Dylan again, Buckets of Rain:
Life is sad, life is a bust
All you can do, is do what you must
You do what you must do and you do it well
I do it for you, O, honeybaby can't you tell
I guess I'm now a fragment of your life to wander free, cause loosing everything is like the sun going down on me.
Saddest for me is Tom Petty "Don't Fade on Me"
I remember you so clearly
The first one through the door.
But I woke up do find you drifting
Too far from the shore.
Was it love that took you under?
Or did you know too much?
Was it something you could picture
But never could quite touch.
...then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto
As her young man dies,
on a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
Well it's been ten years and a thousand tears
And look at the mess I'm in
A broken nose and a broken heart,
An empty bottle of gin
Well I sit and I pray
In my broken down Chevrolet
While I'm singin' to myself
There's got to be another way
[Chorus:]
Take away, take away
Take away this ball and chain
Well I'm lonely and I'm tired
And I can't take any more pain
Take away, take away
Never to return again
Take away, take away
Take away
Take away this ball and chain
Meat Loaf: "Two outta Three Ain't Bad"
"I want you, I need you, but there ain't no way I'm ever going to love you."
"My girl wants to party all the time,
Party all the time,
Part all the ti-me."

Another Prine, this one's sad, yet very funny. From "In Spite Of Ourselves," a duet with Iris DeMent.
He ain't got laid in a month of Mondays
Caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
Here's another one of my favorites:
Poison oak, some boyhood bravery.
When a telephone was a tin can on a string.
And I fell asleep with you still talking to me....
you said you weren't afraid to die.
In polaroids you were dressed in women's clothes.
were you made ashamed? why'd you lock them in a drawer?
Well, I don't think I ever loved you more
than when you turned away and you slammed the door.
And you stole the car and drove to Mexico.
And you wrote bad checks just to fill your arm.
I was young I enough, I still believed in more......
.....Now I'm drunk as hell on a piano bench,
and when I press the keys it all gets reversed.
The sound of loneliness makes me happier.
--Bright Eyes - this kid can write some depressing stuff.
The entire song "Seasons In The Sun" (Terry Jacks) is a major drag.
"Ain't no sunshine anymore...."
I remember how she left me on a stormy night
She kissed me and got out of our bed
And though I pleaded and I begged her not to walk out that door
She packed her bags and turned right away
And she kept on telling me
She kept on telling me
She kept on telling me
I want you
I need you
But there ain't no way I'm ever gonna love you
Something Corporate, Walking By
Your granddad left home for the circus
He was young just like me, with hope to explore
He married a girl in Virginia
She could swing the trapeze, they could sleep on the floor
Your mother was born in December
On the one sunny day
That winter gave up
With warm summer eyes
That flickered like fireflies
And she stared at the world
So why do you leave these stories unfinished?
My cheshire cat doorstop with tears in your eyes
And why do you look when you've already found it?
And what did you find that would leave you walking by?
She was raised in a New England village
Then she moved to L.A. with a firefly stare
And you loved sunset strip when it sparkled
You grew up and you sparkled, but why don't you care?
And why do you leave these stories unfinished?
My cheshire cat doorstop with tears in your eyes?
And why do you look when you've already found me?
And what did you find that could leave you walking by?
And these nights I get high just from breathing
When I lie here with you, I'm sure that I'm real
Like that firework over the freeway
I could stay here all day but that's not how you feel
So why do you leave these questions unanswered?
The circus awaits and you're already gone
My cheshire cat doorstop with fear in your smile
What makes it so easy for you to be walking by?
And what did I do that you can't seem to want me?
And why do we lie here and whisper goodbyes?
And where can I go that your pictures won't haunt me?
What makes it so easy for you to be walking by?
