I'm seeing zero difference in the mindset and work ethic in my programs from before or after NP had their run. I'm sure there were programs that were influenced by their rise and eventual fall, but we are pretty consistent in what we do, and outside teams have very little influence on our culture. #2 is the biggest thing as our main competition is just down the road. If anyone is forcing us to adapt, work hard, change things...It is American Fork.
Really? In my HS the results of NP at least got talked about (although none of us thought we'd be able to do it lol). The effect I'd hypothesize NP having would be more of a 'recognizing the ceiling is much higher than previously thought' type thing. It's easier to believe you can run under 9 when you know another school has 5 guys running under 8:40, but I don't expect that it would provide any day-to-day motivation. I did think having AF nearby probably made more of a difference on a day-to-day level, since at my school we were always comparing ourselves to, and training to beat, the schools near us. Ditto for AF, as I'm sure the strongest competition in the country being next door is more motivation.
Herriman was not one of the best programs in the nation before you became the coach, but AF has been one of the best for I don't know how long. Did you have to shift the mindset of the athletes there when you joined? Or change how you approached things from Great Oak?
