I've run 19 miles at 4:50 pace on a hot sunny day, on a tough course at NYCM, thinking I was slow enough, but wasn't. Like I said, a marathon is easy until suddenly it becomes extremely difficult.
4:47 for 16 miles would have been easy for me, even on a hot day.
Umm, you have maybe one career result indicating you could maybe hit 4:47 for 16 miles. A 1:01:43 half roughly projects to 4:47 over 16 miles. Not saying you weren’t a great runner, but either your measurements were off on your training runs or you’re faster in your memory that you were in reality (little of both?). Maybe technology is better now and you could have done it easier with super shoes, but on your best day you could maybe have hit 4:47 for 16, so it never was ‘easy’ for you on any day.

16 miles at 4:47 is not difficult. You don't have a clue what you're talking about.
I'm not sure how this workout simulates anything? I've never run a marathon that didn't fell easy (yes I said easy) all the way through 17 miles -- then suddenly felt impossibly difficult between 17-19 miles.
I've never understood it either. It's a Hanson's bread and butter.
A 30k seems to be more predictive, especially if you can find a 30k race to enter and have the restraint to hold back and run it like a marathon.
My two best marathons were preceded by a 30k 3-4 weeks away at the same pace.
16, even in the middle of a high mileage week, does not seem predictive of anything to me.

Maybe maybe not, but the facts show that you never ran 16 miles at 4:47 pace. It’s nota a judgement jsut a fact

Your ignorant opinion is not a fact. You don't have any idea what elite athletes can do.
And I probably have 20 ir 30 sessions that Panning could never do even if he tried. So what? That doesn't diminish his talent.. Ai least 20 runners in the OT could run 16 miles at 4:47 without a problem. And no one would feel compelled to boast about it. Its a training session.Nothing more. Have some perspective.

Mine is fact, not opinion.
It’s a FACT that you have never run 16 miles at 4:47 pace. I don’t say this to be mean in any way but it IS a FACT.
It’s your OPINION that you could have run 16 miles at 4:47!0-?3

Hansons loves simulators and overtraining and running too fast
Whats your evidence? Hansons have a long history of taking second tier athletes and making them competitive on the National, and sometimes International scene. In my opinion thats doing something right. If that's overtraining, perhaps you should be taking notes?

You are ignorant, and I'm done wasting time with you. Good luck.

But what do I know I was a nobody.

The workout isn't meant to predict, it's another notch in locking in on marathon pace. Knowing their pace is a major reason Zach moved to 12th in Budapest, ran the 2nd fastest time of any American in 2012, Sell reeled in Khannouchi/Browne in 2008, and Des ran patiently enough to make it in 2016.
Just another opportunity for Panning to dial into 4:45-4:50 pace in the at the tail end of six 130 mile weeks.

Agreed, the only way to “predict” marathon pace is to run a full marathon, but I will say that 16 miles at 4:47 pace is VERY fast and a pace that very few American runners in history could achieve

You were clearly a faster miler/steeple chaser than him so you should have been able to do workouts he couldn’t.
Not arguing that other runners in the trials couldn’t do it, but why are you compelled to boast about it when your running history indicates that on your best day you’d barely be able to run that in a race.
It makes you seem very out of touch boomerish trying to hang onto your glory. Just admit runners are faster now (for whatever reason), give him some credit and move on.
