LRC note. This thread was initially entitled, "Al Cantello has dies (sic) He was a Hall of Fame XC and Track Coach at the United States Naval Academy." The OP asked us to correct the typo.
It should be noted that like probably all coaches, not everyone loved running for Coach Cantello. Here is a thread from a disgruntled ex-runner: My experience with Al Cantello, United States Naval Academy Coach from 1963-2018 - LetsRun.com.

"Navy dies from the front." Love him or hate him, you can't deny his results. RIP

I saw Al Cantello at an All-Cpmers meet at American University in probably 1959.
I'd just finished my sophmore year in HS as a 2:23 880 guy.

Agreed 100% he prepared me for the fleet and made me the man I am today IMHO
As a thrower, nobody in history got more out of a 5'8" (that's generous) frame. RIP

Yeah. He had to be freaky strong. I mouthed off to him once - he grabbed my skinny arm and i felt like it was in a vice. I shut up real quick.
He put his hands on you? Why would a coach need to do that?

I don't mean to pick a fight, but Michael Landon (yes, the actor) was a state champion in the javelin. He was 5'9" According to his Wikipedia:
Landon attended Collingswood High School[2][4] and was an excellent javelin thrower, with his 193 ft 4 in (58.93 m) toss in 1954 being the longest throw by a high schooler in the United States that year.
He got a scholarship to USC based on that effort, but tore his should ligaments shortly after, ending his career. I remember reading somewhere that the guy who got second in the state meet he won was "twice his size."
