It's also not like Jakob is some slouch at 5000m that will be broken by a fast pace.
He ran 12:48 two years ago and seems to be in better shape now.
The point is more they have broken Katir Krop and Grijalva on the circuit and know a really fast last 1,600-2,000 is necessary. None of those three are slouches but they have shown they are amazing in 12:50 races and less formidable in 12:40 races.

Some or most of the J Ingebrigtsen fanboys don't seem to understand the value of a fast pace in a 5000m race. Fanboys of J Ingebrigtsen can use lactate meters and slide rulers and determine on a cool summer northern European night near Arctic Circle, J Ingebrigtsen, in theory may be capable of low-12:4x.xx 5000m. The men in The Field with sub-12:50 5000m p.b. need to make J I at least slightly uncomfortable through 4000m. A 5000 race, with no man capable of sub-2:27.50 is how to beat J Ingebrigtsen. Yesterday, about 10:50.xx split at 4000m, about 2:21.xx final 1000m. Only Mohammed Katir was capable of 1000m in 2:21.xx after such as slow 4000m. The Field need to run the kick out of J Ingebrigtsen.
I totally agree with this. If you front-run 12:40 during the season but don't even attempt to recreate that strategy when it matters most, I'm not sure what you expect to happen against 3:27/28 1500 guys. Same thing as when Mo Farah was in his prime; the others ALWAYS let the race play right into his hands every time. I hope the 12:40 boys will learn from this, they weren't even close to Jakob and Mo in the last 100m...it was basically a mile race and the milers dominated.
I tend to agree too, but I remember the Sydney Olympics 5k won in 13:35.49 by Million Wolde of Ethiopia (3:39 1500m PR) over Ali Saidi-Sief of Algeria (3:29 1500m PR). Everyone expected Sief to win. He went to the lead with 2 laps to go but Wolde got up to his shoulder on the final lap and passed him on the home straight. So, if you knew Ingebritsen was sick, and that Katir had performed poorly in the 5k, and you watched film from Sydney the night before, maybe you thought you could handle those guys on the last lap.
Saidi-Stefan was a doping cheat. He was off the juice during the Olympics.
seriously. i have no idea what they are doing. you never pull a tactical against a person with a significantly higher PR than you in a lower distance race. these guys should've learned from all the years of lagat/elguerrouj dominance.
1) you have a faster PR than jakob in the 5000m
2) jakob has a faster PR than you in the 1500m
taking turns running 800s at 12:45 pace would've given them a chance at first place. trying to outsprint a person who is significantly faster than you in the 1500m is absolutely not a good idea.

Did any of you ever compete in a race? Let us say the conditions in Budapest were not ideal for a fast 5000m. Let us say the fastest possible time was 12:50 or so. Let us say that would have required a couple pacemakers dragging the top guys through 4000m or so. There were no pacemakers. There is a reason that the World Championship record is 12:52.79 in a race which arguably featured the 3 greatest runners we have ever seen. There was no way running 12:45 pace by the top guys would have done anything other than lead to them fading badly in the final few laps. They didn’t do it because they cannot. IF they had 12:45 in their legs, they would have kicked faster on the last lap off that slow pace. Reality escapes some of you. Kejelcha and Gebrhiwet can kick if they are feeling great. Apparently they weren’t. Maybe it is so hard to make the Ethiopian team that they are past their peak by the Championships.

Lagat and El G won each 1 global 5000m, thats not "years of dominante" if you ask me
This time you may be right 600m man that the Ethiopians should have run fast earlier in the race. BUT YOU ARE RIGHT WITH A WRONG ARGUMENT!
The reason an earlier faster pace might have broken Jakob isn´t that he hasn´t the potential to run as fast as them in the 5000m. Jakob is in mine (and several other SERIOUS posters´) opinion at least a 12:40 man in the right well paced 5000m.
But in this 5000m final he wasn´t 100% so a fast race might have killed him.
But if Jakob is at his very best the East Africans have a "choice between the Plague and Cholera":
If they go out fast they spend their energy without being able to drop him to be destroyed in the last lap and if they try to run tempo later as in this final (where Gebrhiwet started to go faster 2,200m out) the result will be the same. Jakob is a specialist in running a last 1000m close to the other competitors PBs.

I mean they closed in 3:55 with a 53 second last lap, they just got beat by 3:54 and 52. Don't think it has anything to do with not feeling great, they just simply will not beat 1,500 specialists in a last lap sprint in a slow race and Im not sure why they continue to think they will. Now they go home with zero medals, despite having the 3 fastest PRs in the field.

OK then we can agree they ran well. Thank you for pointing that out.

When you have 2 runners who are 3:27 and 3:28. You don't run 13:15 lol
None of the 12:40-42 runners have a medal. Good job guys ! (ironic)
What are they supposed to do, run the wheels off a 3:27/7:54 guy who beat the world record holder to win the most recent WCs at this event?
Jakob is the male version of genzebe dibaba. Now it will take a male version of almaz ayana to beat him, someone absolutely relentless, who can churn out the laps at top pace.
Don’t forget about the weather you can’t run 12:50 on a hot day period. Those two 1500m runners Jakob and Katir are a rare breed of runners. They both are fast and strong at both events. No many athletes can do that besides these two athletes I can only recall El G and Bernard Lagat. Fast or slow race under any conditions there’s no much you can do about it period.

All 4 are strongly suspected of being dopers of course. This tends to help the 1500 runner at 5000m.
They may have essentially conceded the Gold with their strategy but they might have anticipated that they ran smart if they wanted to get a medal. They are not necessarily incorrect about this of course.

The majority of posters on this site do not understand the physiology of a “kick” much less understand weather and how it relates to performance. Agreed - he was winning anyways. He’s better than all of them.
