Why does everyone think that life is about having fun and doing exciting things? You're bound to be disappointed if you measure life in that way..
If not, then what is it about? Accumulating and hoarding money with no purpose? Becoming a CEO of a major company? Attempting some completely unrealistic goal like curing cancer, developing commercially available fusion power, or achieving world peace?
I got a job making $45k and eventually moved up to a job making $100k. End result: $4k in retirement savings (not a typo) and a defined benefit plan that pays $760/month forever if I were to quit now. The fine print is that can't collect it until 2040, and who knows what $760 will be worth by that time.
What job do you have that allows you to draw a pension so young? Also, are you sure it stays fixed at $760? (I would assume it would be linked to some measure of inflation, if not your salary) Also presumably your entitlement will grow if you carry on working.
Coumputer/IT guy in the public sector. The formula is X% (depends on the age you start collecting) times number of years working for any city or county in the state, or for the state itself, times highest salary. If I were to quit today, from 2040 onwards, I'd get:
1% x 9.1 years x $8350 a month = $760
No Social Security, but I will get Medicare at 65. The $760 will get adjusted for inflation, but only after 2040. Assuming 2% inflation a year then, I'd get the following each month:
Interesting that no one has mentioned any religion as a way for this fellow to find meaning. Not long ago it would have been so simple. Get married, go to church, get involved in the community, have kids and carry on. No time, or reason, to whine.
