Is 80 minutes fast from a world class perspective? No.
Is it fast for this guys running club? Sure.
Y'all are just jealous.
- While you are sitting in your sparsely decorated condo obsessing over your 15:28 in the 5k, this guy is getting praised by hot moms and weekend warriors for his 80 min 1/2 thon.
- At running club happy hour, people joke that your friend is an elite athlete headed to the Olympics. You didn't even get invited.
-When people in the running club look for motivation, they think about your friend, the nice average guy who ran a solid time. When you finish a 10k in a "disappointing" 33 minutes and gorge yourself on post-race bananas, no one is impressed.
Your friend is part of the running community, you are just an obsessed hobby jogger.
You are quick to paint a picture of who you hope I am because I don't think an 80 minute half is fast. Seems like you're either projecting or you're thinking of somebody specific that you have been meaning to take your anger out on. I've already stated I don't train very much anymore so I'm definitely not the crazy guy at the finish line. I like to race because it's fun to hurt, but it's been a year or two since I've run sub-33 minutes (still faster than an 80 minute half though).
This guy says he ran a 15:30 in college. He used to regularly tell people he was "in 15:30 shape" and could have run that in college but these days he just flat out says he ran 15:30.
I do go to the group runs occasionally but I get real annoyed listening to his lies. I'm a believer that you run the times you run and you can't go around making up PRs because you had a couple of overreaching workouts.
His fastest time that I've ever seen was 16:25 at a road race he says was long, even though it was USATF certified. No 15:30 to his name.
The only thing impressive about his 80 minute half is that it's verified.
Only 16 years who train in a running club or do another aerobic sport can.
Most 16 years struggle to finish 5-10km.
80 min half is fast for people who did not run in their youth or are older then 50 years.
My suggestion for you is to to try a sport you did not do as a child, then compare yourself to some 16 year olds who train the sport.
Then you will stop beeing so arrogant
Everyone's argument is "80 is fast for ___ years old," or "80 is fast for a person who ___," but if you have to add all those qualifiers to the time maybe take a step back and realize if it's fast it doesn't need qualifiers.
You said it yourself, 80 is fast for people who didn't run in their youth or older than 50 years old, but guess what? This guy ran in his youth and is in his 30s. By your definition he is not fast.
Any average hobbyjogger should be able to hit this time regardless of gender
I think for men with no XC or track background, and picking up running after college (22), a good 1/2 time with 16-20 weeks of training (4-5 mos., spring and summer for a fall peak) would be 1:40 or faster. Obviously if you ran XC or track in HS or college that is different.

LRC is a great board with honesty and raw opinions, unfiltered, but a key flaw is survivorship bias--a lot of studs work hard and have talent but aren't aware how much slower the general public is.
Times like 16-17:30/34-38/1:15-1:22/2:38-2:48 are considered slow to LRCers but to the general public those are local AG awards at various races, esp. in Columbus.

Whos the judge of fast? Its all relative. Maybe to him that 80 min is fast! Maybe to his club which Im sure is his community, all think its fast. Good for him on his accomplishment and for his peers being excited. Maybe dont be a jag bag and be happy for someone youre calling a friend.
80 minutes is fast for the general population and/or for the non-talented types. It has you in the top-5 or top-10, if not better, at local races. For an open male, it shows BQ potential. You're putting in the work to run that time.
The upper end of elite running skews what we think is good. It's a world of difference to run 59/65/70/75/80. All of the times are good. I think most people who run 80 have a pretty good appreciation for people who run faster than they can.

Qualifying for Boston isn't really that impressive either.

It is if you come from a non-running background or get started late. But if you are a D1-D3 stud, probably not.
I don't get it. Who in their right mind thinks approximately 22.75 seconds per 100 m for a bunch of them stacked together is fast. If you saw someone run that for 100m you would be quietly thinking yeah ain't fast. But you think just because someone can do several of them not all of a sudden they are quick? 80 mins for the half, depending on athlete, training history, age etc, if anything, is reflective of some okay aerobic capacity. But that's it. No it is not fast. Don't like it? Train more get fitter run quicker don't settle and get down and depressed about how a bunch of dudes on here say it's a bad time. It is a not a good time, but good starting point, that a lot of people would happily trade with you, raise your standards and you will be glad you did.
For a 58 year male, a 1:20 half marathon is age graded at 87.4%, which would be “national class.” The equivalent open time for males less than 40 would be 1:06.22.
As a 58 year old male runner, I would be very happy with a 1:20. If I was 38, I would not be happy with that.

Again, saying it's "fast for a ___ year old" means it wasn't ever fast.

My PR is around 1:37, so I would have been ecstatic to run 1:20 at any age.
My friend ran an 80 minute half marathon. His running club is fawning over him. Is 80 minutes fast? This is a male. I know tons of people from my college days who could have easily broken 80 minutes. Heck, once in college I ran a HM with a teammate and we even went around 74 minutes.
He also ran a 2:58 marathon. You would have thought he broke a world record based on his social media.
Have we lowered our standards too low? If you train fairly seriously I feel like almost anyone can run 6:10 pace for a half marathon. I also don't think qualifying for Boston is really that impressive either. Going and racing Boston is a cool experience, but qualifying for it is not very difficult if you take the time to train. Especially if you're over 35.
Ya sound jealous of all the attention he's getting bro.

Yeah, seriously, who thinks Kipchoge is fast. Just cuz he can run a bunch of 17 second 100Ms stacked on top of each other everyone loses their f'ing minds. /s

One 17 second 100 is about as impressive as an 80 minute half.

Not really jealous of an 80 minute half marathoner, unfortunately for you.
Why did you include the word "unfortunately"? Why is it unfortunate (for anyone else) that you don't feel jealous?
I'm pointing this out because the way that you are responding to everyone on here makes it seem like you are an immature child. Maybe you are? I don't know.
Also, for whatever reason, you are jealous regardless of what you claim. You created a post about your "friend" just to sh*t on his accomplishments. Why? Because you are a jealous d*ck.

I say unfortunately because you obviously needed to believe that I was jealous to make yourself feel better. Unfortunately, that's not the case and you'll have to make something else up. I'm guessing your PR is 80:01 or slower but you'll probably lie just to "prove me wrong."
so what is fast? Even a 63 would need a qualifier - 63 is fast for an ______,
Every time short of a WR would need a qualifier. An 80 may not be fast for me (im a 45+) but it is fast for the vast majority of people.
I can tell you my friends that run 63-64 are well faster than me, but they sure do not begrudge me for being slow nor do they act superior. They actually are some of my biggest supporters in my quest to get faster.
