Is it just me, or are all physical therapists incompetant?

I have a horror story about P/T. I was sent there in January for low back pain and what was thought to be unrelated ileotibial band pain. I have a replaced right hip and a replaced left knee. The therapist was constantly making me do movements my orthopedic surgeon said were no-no's for people with replaced joints. This "therapist" also yanked on my legs, creating pain in my LEFT hip, which will likely now have to be replaced sooner than later. I was in so much pain after every session I would crawl up the stairs of our home on my hands and knees and crawl into bed, where I'd lie for 2 straight days until the next torture session. I saw ZERO improvement in a month's time and quit. Ended up getting an epidural steroid injection which stopped both the back AND the I/T band pain [they WERE related]. Feel great now. Will never entertain the thought of P/T EVER again; my spine doctor mentioned it last week at a follow-up appointment and I nearly burst into tears. It causes me THAT much panic and anxiety.

And YES, I spoke up at every session about the new problems the exercises were causing and was told "no pain, no gain". How about "I never come back and there will be NO PAIN?!"

Not all are like that. But, there does seem to be a feeling that the majority of those "drills" could be done at home

Just seen a physiotherapist at my gp practice (UK). Literally in for 10 minutes, most of which was answering survey questions. Then he sent me an email with some exercises. Thank goodness I didn't pay for this.

They are useless. Just look up the exercises on youtube.

That's an AT not a PT

Go to a PT and you will likely be asked to come back for a number of sessions. You do some exercises with them and they send you on your way when your sessions are up. You may feel better, which may have been the result of the body's natural healing process.

There is almost never any analysis done as to whether or not they actually helped the problem.

You are right. It is mostly a racket.

Fobbed off by another physio this morning. At the end of the day there are 3 options:

1. Don't get injured in the first place

2. Get a scan if the injury is long term

3. Use youtube and figure it out yourself
