my senior year of high school I ran 4:16 for the 1600 and was able to bench 265. Keep in mind that I am built like a barrel and my times suffered as the distances increased.

I would imagine someone out there has to have done it.
I was at 295 bench, and 4:19 at altitude. So I know I was not even close in the mile, but only ran it 3 times in 4 years of college. Was an 800 guy instead. I rekon I would have been 4;08 range had I trained for and raced the mile. So i am still way off but, I am not that great of an athlete, so I wager someone had to have done it.
Goucher was into weights, I pretty sure he wasnt near 300 but I am pretty darned sure he could break 220.
see this is a bit more realistic.....at least this guy has taken enough physics to Know that if your IF this were to happen...it damn sure wouldnt be some lanky person over 6'..
i mean really i swear to god people....the BS fairy must have been real busy last night
weird, i always thought you went to EMU.

A friend of mine just called me and mentioned the question at hand. Additionally he mentioned that I was tossed around as a probable for having done this. You are correct. Obviously everyone knows that I did run sub 4 . My highest bench was in my soph. year at Mich. when I benched 305lbs. I was injured and dedicating more time than usual to the gym and pool.

It is a 132 lb. GIRL that set the Michigan state bench record of 235 pounds. They have pictures and she is really kind of skinny looking. Also, if you look at
http://www.usapowerlifting.com
they have the national records. For men in the open division in the 148 pound class it is 429 pounds for the bench.
They guy I witnessed set a Michigan state record of 300 + lbs. in the bench for the 148 pound class. This was years ago and I am sure it has been broken since. I didn't ask his running PRs because I don't think he spoke English, he wasn't a runner, plus he was stronger then me and might have beat me up.
Best wishes.
My mile PR is 3.59.4. I ran that when I weighed 140 pounds. I am 6 feet tall. After 8 years of daily weight training I am now 165 pounds. My max bench is now 225 (one rep). It took me over a year to work up to be able to do 10 reps of 135. People think I am still too skinny at 165.
she looks kinda skinny???...are you high?
Look at how short her arms are...and think about the earlier posters talking about guys in the 6'4" range..
and then do some of your own critical think...
Ever line up in a race with a bunch of 4 minute milers?
They are skinny.
None are benching 300 lbs, ever.
In pictures alongside other skinny guys, some look big.
4min/300lbs, not going to happen.
Sam F, you wing nut. If a 132 lb girl can push 235 lbs off her breast, surely it is plausible that a well oiled 4 min miler has the potential to get three hundred up. I will give it to you that a skinny/ lanky body isn't ideal. But a 6'2, 185 pounder could do it. There have been a few that size break 4. All I am saying is that it isn't that impossible. It was only 60 years ago that physician's thought a human would die if they ran a 4 min. mile. Get out of the dark ages SAM F.

Dude, that chick is not skinny. No high level miler in the world is even close to being built like her.
Also, how does knowing the national record for the 148 pound weight class do us any good. Obviously no 4 minute miler will not be within shouting distance of a national record holder.
The state record holder you talked about is an even better indicator of how tough that was. So basically a 4 minute miler who weighed 148 lbs. would have to nearly set a state record in order to hit 300+.

Show me one 3:59 guy who is built like that.
LOLOLOL
6'2" 185... .300lb bench..no chance in hell
and the bit about the 4min mile....made for hollywood, im sure there were some people that though that 4min was impossible and that you would die trying...
but given that the record was 4:02 or something...im sure there were some reasonable folks who relized it was going to happen.
you cant just make up figures and say "it could happen", "they use to say the 4min mile would kill you!!"
4min mile 300lb bench, is highly unlikely....and IF someone did it they wouldnt be 6'2"....you all seem to think that for some reason being over 6' is some kind of advantage in lifting....frankly.....your full of s***.
i'm with Sam F, everyone on this thread is full of it... i find it highly unlikely that someone can run 4 min mile and bench over 200, let alone 300lbs.
by the way, the chick that someone posted a picture of 132 of power or some crap... that was bad example. i would wager that that girl would have problems running an 8 minute mile
to be honest i think alan webb is the bulkiest 4 minute miler i've ever seen
Have watched this post with interest..I was a sub-4 guy at 6ft2in and was close to 180lbs. Got close to 250 in the bench for a single rep, but could not fathom 300. Would be great to find someone who has managed this feat.
The season before my first sub4 I tipped the scales at 186lbs and may have benched 300, but only ran 3:43 for 1500m (did not run a full mile).

....or pass a drug test, which I think is the only way anyone could pull this off (dirty).
I can only think of three possibles (at least from the distance side):
Paul McMullen (as someone mentioned above)
Craig Mottram
David Krumenacker (I know he lifts, but I don't know how heavy)
I do know that Lee Evans ran 4:35 in all-comer at the same time he held the WR in the 400, so I think someone from the sprint side might be able to get within 10% of 4:00 and lift 300, and this would be easier than someone from the endurance side getting within 10% of 300.
Juantorena on epo?
Even for pure sprinters NOT doing aerobic running, a 2X body weight bench is considered excellent/outstanding strength. Most milers are quite small, and I can't conceive of someone with the muscle fiber to run sub-4 (VO2max of 75) even moving a 300 pound bar up from their chest, let alone all the way up.

Goucher is 6'2" 140ish, and very lanky. I would be floored if he could throw up a bar with 4 45's on it.
I think the sub 4/300 is possible, but i serriously doubt anyone has done it in the same time frame. No one capable of running sub 4 is going to sabotage there running by putting on the extra upperbody bulk that benching 300 would require. But i'm sure someone fast enough and compact enough, like Webb, could put on 10 to 15 lbs of muscle to lift 300 and still be able to muster a 3:59.

Well it is only the decathlon but it does include 100m.

Anyway to verify the bench part? Or at least show us a picure so we know what a beast like this looks like.
His 1500 best was actually 3:36.19.
