Well we sure as hell shouldn't be letting someone take on a $100k in student loans which Uncle Sam will now forgive to get these majors that do not add value. I have no problem with you getting a worthless major. But I do not want it on the faith of the US government which means it will likely be forgiven in the future if you can't pay it, which means everyone else has paid for your crappy education. If everyone had to get their degree on their dime or convince a bank to loan them the money to pay these low quality degrees would be reduced real quick.
There are a couple things in play with this subject.
One, the subject is that college is a scam in general and no one should be paying all of that money for a college degree. So, take the government out of the equation for that part.
Bill Maher is old and college was cheap way back in. And he never had children.
So, he has no point of reference for today's world.
If people have the means, they should be able to buy whatever they want. Do you agree with that?
And the means could mean the ability to take on and pay for a loan.
Two, there's this idea of loan forgiveness.
This is simply a stimulus plan. Without these loans hanging over people's heads, they could spend more into the economy.
That would be similar to big bank and corporation bailouts.
Judge that as you will but that's what it is.
I don't foresee universal loan forgiveness happening. They couldn't even agree to drop the interest rates to zero percent.
Three, there are proposals for free college.
To me, this means tuition for in state college or trade schools that people apply for and get accepted to.
An extension of 12th grade.
I would not think that it would extend to free room and board.
