My vote is Allen Iverson. Incredibly athletic and a top5 NBA player despite constant battering. I think with training he could be world class in a number of sports but he chose NBA riches.
Voting for a "non"revenue athlete is too much of a stretch for me. If they were truly the best athlete in the world they would shift their talents and make as much money as they could.
agree completely. ai f***in' rocks!
1)barry bonds but then i would disqualify him for drug use.....
2) my next choice would be lance armstrong, who i don't believe is dirty, just my opinion. i think the frenchies just hate him because he is an american who has dominated their race....
3) third choice would be any top american distance runner who has to compete with the drug frauds from africa. high- sham-g, geb, etc. you disgust me....
How can Brett Favre be the world's greatest athlete if the sport he is in is only played in America and Canada.

how stupid of you. america has the greatest athletes in the world, from lance to jordan, to favre to bonds, trust me no one could compete with the americans if they all took up american football....
Jim Thorpe! Anyone who knows the history of sports should know that this question cannot be honestly answered as to who is right or wrong. But, Jim Thorpe is fitting if you were to pick one.

Merriam-Webster defines ATHLETE as: : a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina
Greatest "Athlete" in the world by definition is too broad of a question:
I will list my opinion of greatest male athlete by sport:
Basketball: Michael Jordan/Iverson close second
Baseball: Bo Jackson
Boxing: Ali
Cycling: Armstrong
Eating: Kobayashi eating 50+ hotdogs twice w/bun in 12 mintes deserves to be mentioned. Kobayashi only weighs 145lbs.
Football: Bo Jackson
Golf: Tiger Woods
Gymnastics: Any top gymnast in their era had to be pretty damn athletic.
Poker: Phil Helmuth
Soccer/Football: Pele/Maradona tie
Swimming: Phelps performance was amazing, to accomplish that much in modern day competition is unbelievable.
Tennis: Pete Sampras
Track and Field: Paavo Nurmi/Jesse Owens tie because you can't compare distance running to sprinting
Whoa, awesome links. In that first one they have recaps from previous years. A few that stick out:
1999 100 yard dash
1. Joey Galloway 9.23
2. Dan O'Brien 9.56
3. Marvin Harrison 9.78
4. Warren Sapp 15.12
Now, the times - who cares about the times. I have little faith in the Superstars people accurately measuring or timing any race of any distance. Plus it's yards. But the interesting thing is that we finally get to see a track and field athlete race some NFL guys. Dan O'Brien has a pr of 10.23, so to see him get smoked - I'm impressed by Joey Galloway.
Here's another one, from 1994:
100 meter dash
1. Mike Powell 10.70
2. Eric Metcalf 11.3e
3. James Washington 11.3e
4. Mike Pigg 14.7e
