HEPS Track and Field 2012-13

Whaddaya mean, too early for this thread? It had to start sometime, and the first indoor meet (at least for Cornell) is just two weeks from today! Others follow the Ivy League more closely than I, and I'd be interested to get your thoughts on the coming t&f season(s). The Columbia women had an inspiring win indoors* last year--it was hard to begrudge them--with excellent coverage of the events, but did not contend outdoors and are coming off a disappointing cross-country season. They recruited very well in a number of events and should again be major players in the Heps, esp. indoors. The Cornell women, ECAC champs indoors and Heps winners outdoors, also recruited well. Several of their frosh saw major competition during cross; on the other hand, many of the middle-distance group apparently did not race at all in the fall, and it will be interesting to see whether they compete in the team's season-opening relay meet. The Cornell men brought in major recruits to plug anticipated graduation holes in their hurdles and multi crews--particularly the former--but some frosh take a while to handle the extra three inches in the highs. The Big Red added several real threats in the throws--inconsistency in those events may have cost them the Heps outdoor meet--but the real question for them remains the distance events. Coming off an improved xc season, the Big Red have to hope that the competitiveness they showed there will carry over to the longer track events. But even with improvement in many/most event areas, can the Cornell men come up with enough points to beat Princeton? Cornell has the larger roster, but the squad size is the same for everybody at Heps; and the Tigers, coming off perhaps their best cross season ever, return tremendous firepower in nearly every event, even without McCullough. (If he's gone for good, that's a real loss to the League--what a pleasure, to watch him throw!) The Tigers may retain their titles without even having to hope for cooperation from the Harvard throwers. My real interest, as usual, is in change; and you all know more about that. [b]What teams do you see as likely to move up in Heps standings this year?[/b] It's not hard to guess Harvard, as usual, based on the talent they bring; but what other teams seem ready to make a move? *Strangely, the women's indoor results from last year don't seem to be listed in the HTC archives--not sure why.

Wow, great stats, "fr"--thanks! Yeah, more and more top frosh are moving into the Ivies, but your post was an eye-opener.

(Esp. interesting to me because I don't think anyone's ever mentioned Cornell's frosh group from last year--some/most of the others, yes, but not Cornell's. Maybe they can surprise this fall.)

Congratulations to Stephen Mozia of Cornell! At the U.S. Club Nationals (Icahn Stadium in NYC), he threw 61.13 in the discus--200ft 4in--only the second Ivy Leaguer over 200ft! He broke his own school record in the process.

Hey, maybe he is more of a discus thrower...

Cripes, with him in the shot/disc, Robbins in the jav, and the incoming Winkler in the hammer--not to mention some other quality guys--that's going to be a *tremendous* throws crew.

More news (lightly edited) from the folks at Cornell:

"Rising senior, Bruno Hortelano-Roig, the 2013 HEPS MVP, competing for his native Spain at the European Under 23 Championships in Tempere, Finland, finished 5th in the 200m with a time of 20.70. His time of 20.58 in the semifinal established a new Cornell University record and moved Hortelano to 2nd place on the All-Time HEPS Top 10 list. He now holds the Cornell records in the indoor and outdoor 200 and 400 records as he surpassed the previous record set by former great Carl Francis who ran 20.71 in 1978.

"Bruno's incredible performance extends his season for another month by meeting the qualifying standard for the IAAF World Championships to be held in Moscow, Russia from August 10-19. He also ran the third leg of the 4x100 Relay that finished 3rd overall and set a new Spanish National Record of 38.83 well under the World Qualifying standard of 39.10. . . .

"Hortelano joins teammates Montez Blair and Stephen Mozia among the top 100 athletes in their respective events in the world in 2013. Also continuing their seasons into August will be incoming freshmen Rudy Winkler, the new US High School Record Holder in the hammer throw, and [Canadian] hurdler Jordan Sherwood, who have both qualified for the Pan Am Junior Championships to be held in Medellin, Columbia."
