We live in a world where sub 4:50 and 4:08 is barely making it past prelims😭
50% chance that 4:08 is the winning time tomorrow too in a tactical race
I’d be disappointed if it’s tactical considering Zavaleta talking in interviews about wanting to go sub 4 (I don’t think he’s done any post season track races) but if he wants to attempt sub 4- tmmrw would be the day to do it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s tactical but I wouldn’t immediately jump to the conclusion that it is
As far as I am aware, there ARE minimums for Oakland and SF section athletes if they want to move on to the state meet.
I'm surprised that Chiara Dailey ran the 1600. Her chances of beating Braelyn Combe in the 1600 final tomorrow aren't good. And her chances of winning the 3200 as her second race of the day also aren't good. Dailey's best chance to win a state championship was to skip the 1600 and run the 3200 fresh.
I think Chiara Dailey can win both the 1600 and 3200 tomorrow

Rich Gonzales didn’t even mention Chiara in the 1600 in his preview. She’s State #1. Huge miss. Chiara and Braelyn will hopefully push each other to the 1600M State record today. Everything after that for those 2 is gravy.
Dailey QUADRUPLED at CIF-SD last week, but didn’t have to push too hard to win the weak SD section. Her DNF in the 3200 last year was likely because she was sick much of the season - which made the decision to double last year a little bit foolish. She’s healthy now and has a great coach (Avila) helping her this year, but if she doesn’t do well once again in both events, they’re both going to look really bad. By the way, she won her 1600 heat wearing trainers, which is pretty smart, to preserve herself.
Combe passed day 1 with flying colors. She won both of her heats easily and looked incredibly relaxed. Josie Hill is a big threat in the 800, especially with fresh legs.
Today should be an epic, historic day for these girls, but there are plenty upset-minded ladies ready to pounce.
Does German's 4:00.29 meet (and state?) record go down tonight? Weather conditions are far better than they were a year ago at this meet. I think it'll live to see another year though
I think the favorites would be crazy to let this 1600 go to 4:10+ since a lot of the others have low 1:50 800m speed. I think you need to go under 4:05 to break them

Why do you say it's weak? 19 girls in SDS ran 1600 m in under 5 minutes this year. But agree that she didn't have to work too hard to win the 1600m last weekend.

weak is crazyyy. SD section has 3 guys under 9 minutes with 2 who are close to breaking the 9 minute barrier (Nathan Wilber and Gunner Silva), 3 under 4:10, at least more 6 girls under sub 5, 3 girls under 4:50, 2 girls under 10 with 1 girl who can go under 10:10 and another girl who can go under 10:20. I think we’ve forgotten that the SD section has athletes like Chiara Dailey, Jaelyn Williams (who unfortunately has been out for the whole season), Jaxon Northcutt, Cooper Castleberry, Cam Yarbrough, Nathan Wilber, Eliana Patterson, Ari Llorens, Grace Keefe, and ofc Josiah freaking Bowman. Imo SD section is better than NCS

Yeah, I wasn't even thinking that he was referring to the boys. They're not weak at ALL. But the girls are also pretty strong. I think only Southern Section had more girls under 5 minutes for the 1600m.

How’s that for tactical? 4:02 for Zavaleta to be state champ. Aidan Antonio 2nd 4:03. Stephen Sziebert 3rd 4:03. Everything from 4th to 9th was sub 4:10

Glad they had the balls to take it out fast unlike some dudes in the NCAA. And German FernanGOAT's record still lives 💪
Let's hope the 800m is actually fast too. Too many years has the winning time been 1:50-1:51 and slower than what was ran during the prelims (last year being a prime example)
