Trump's core voters have got a *whole* lot invested in their guy. He was not wrong when he said he could shoot a person in the middle of Fifth Avenue and not lose their votes.

I think his core may well be more than 30% of the country, so it may never be possible for his approval rating to drop below that.

And yes, it's going to be hard as hell to defeat his re-election.

Could/would the GOP not pick him as their candidate in 2020? Has that ever happened before (incumbant's party doesnt support him/her in reelection)?

Plus the democrats have to be much more relevant than middle-right Obama. I don't see it right now. Their best bet is to slow the whole impeachment parade down to about 36 months.
