OSU has hired a number of alumni in the past and seems to be the preferred method of hiring, for whatever reason.
So this is more an OSU hire, than a poor hire.

Is this trolling? Emailing the school because someone worked in sales for a company in a billion-dollar industry?
Seems like someone who knows the OSU program well, won't need to be taught the nuances of that particular place. Figure out the right ways to train? Dave's got that covered. Right way to communicate? Sounds like you've got that down, McNeil...
It's not brain surgery. It's coaching distance runners. Anyone with a pulse can figure it out. Being personable, able to recruit, and able to do what the boss tells them to do (drive vans, conduct workouts at different times for class conflicts to free up the head coach, etc) are more important qualities than most realize.

I’ve seen McNeil all over this site and yes, he’s usually just trolling people who say dumb things. But honestly, he’s not wrong.

This is spot on. We've known Anna since she was in middle school. Not only was she an outstanding athlete, but she has the emotional intelligence that clearly many of you lack. It's not rocket science or quantum physics, it's distance running. Just volunteering somewhere, being a GA, or just being jealous doesn't make you more qualified. The market is a great equalizer. If you were good enough to have a job, you'd have it. Bad mouthing someone else won't get you the job you think you, or your buddy, deserve. Her getting hired isn't dragging the profession down-quite the contrary. We wish her well knowing that she'll work hard and certainly won't get caught up in the pettiness that pervades this message board.

The market is not the great equalizer in track. Many bad programs/coaches exist for far to long. And especially when it comes to jobs. There is no "market" in track and that is the overall problem. The most straight up sport when it comes to measurable improvement ignores it.

I was just thinking. The only 2 power 5 throws jobs went to a high school level volunteer coach and a fired out of the profession quota. Outstanding year gentleman. But even with how bad that sounds... the p5 distance hires of late sound even worse. Just an amazing profession.

The position filled by the volunteer that you referenced was so low paying, in an area with a high cost of living, that he may have been their best option?
Emma Abrahamson (of San Diego/Vanderbilt/Oregon) announced via social yesterday that she will be taking some time away from being an Influencer to accept the position of assistant coach at the University of Portland.
The Rutgers position was has a lot of history between the head and hire. I know for a fact that an out of work p5 coach interviewed and would have accepted it. Needed a job. So he valued trust/loyalty over program success and that is his right.
The Stanford hire is a case of how do you hide the woman. JJ hires based on resume for the events that he is going to value the most. Then hides the hr hire in the throws. All it tells you is how he is planning to win.
