I think you're failing to understand that, for events like these, the only way in which they are real to anyone not actually on site the entire time is via the posted data. As "spectators" this is ALL we see. Even if we show up in person for a few hours, we are only seeing a tiny sliver of the whole enterprise. Contrast this with just about any other sporting endeavor. Even in marathon running it is possible to witness the entirety of the running via life stream, and even when following remotely via the mid-race data, we can trust that the athlete we're watching is being observed by 10s of thousands of disinterested observers the whole time (this is for elites and potential record-breakers, obviously).
So if the data are "bad", as you freely admit, then, from the point of view of the viewing public, this event is not happening, and will not not have happened, as long as the data are not real. It is null and void as a sporting endeavor. We can leave it to the people who are fine with the appearance of a sporting event to continue getting off on Goodge and Co's schtick, but everyone who cares about ultra running as a sport should, with one voice, be calling this sh*t out for what it is.
I have no doubt that none of his runs will ever be recognised inside the ultra community. I also don’t think it matters to him. It’s only a very small group and not his target audience.
For the average punter however this run is very real, despite the lack of data.
If you want them to share your opinion then you need to provide a reason they can grasp. Otherwise everywhere outside of your small niche community Goodge will be the TransAus record holder.
It’s a numbers game and you’re getting overwhelmed.
