First, it's a known fact the Putin wants a Trump presidency and in 2016, 2020 and 2024 he engaged in illegal disinformation campaigns to aide Trump (Hilary's email, disinformation plants on Hunter and other efforts)
Trump was and is obsequious to Putin. He lobbied to remove consequences for Russia's illegal annexation of Crimes and he worked to weaken NATO and to reduce Ukraine's ability to defend itself. He will never criticize Putin.
Trump has been a consistent supporter of Putin, and Putin saw that Trump lead his followers to become Putin supporters.
Putin correctly determined that with Trump's influence America would be divided in its response to the attack.
Of course, Putin was right. The Republican Congress is a tremendous help to Putin's efforts to conquer Ukraine. The attack also might make Biden look bad and help his boy Trump back in the Whitehouse.
