It just needs to pass near the reader, but passing directly over it increases the odds of it being read. It is the same technology used on many door locks, turnstiles, etc. In years past, the D-tag was the most commonly used method, where the RFID chip was in a loop you put on your shoe. At that point, Frank was putting the D-tag on a lanyard and then stooping down with the chip in order to get a split. They improved the range and switched to bib-mounted tags, and that was when he started using the bib belt to carry his chip instead.

+1, and not sure what Loyola High School administrators, alums and parents are thinking. What makes them look even more foolish are the quotes from Coach Diaz in the first LA Times article. At the time the LA Times article was published, the MI articles were out, the message board was well established, and Diaz was aware of this but still went on the record to defend Frankie. It doesn't make any sense. A simple "no comment, he's no longer affiliated with the program" would have ended the story for Loyola. I can't figure out why the Loyola High School peeps want to protect this cheater and fraud.

Word is there's currently an emergency night time meeting of Loyola High School administrators, board of directors, Principal, parent reps, senior head boys and all available Athletics Dept staff.

Haven't yet had the word on what it is they're are going to discuss, but Head Coach Lalo Diaz and Assistant Coach Dr Phillip Bland aren't invited.

...(ABC 7) reported that Loyola said Frank stepped down in June as assistant coach for "health reasons" and that Loyola had "no comment" because this wasn't Loyola related. Or something like that. Also, Aztlan Athletics CEO Jose Zavalos was in the piece supporting Meza...Zavalos is not convinced Meza cheated because of how good Meza is on the trails. Almost got seasick watching doubler's Skype interview. The report mentioned that Meza's Phoenix marathon is being looked at. Frank's "team" says that all of the allegations will be responded to in due time, but now's not the right time lol.

Let's not forget what started people to look closer. It all started with the wax museum tip followed by "it's only a matter of time"'s finds. I believe he also found the stepping in photo. deadesq and doubler came late to the party. They've done a great job, but the early posters were key.

Yes, he dug the hole too deep...went to the well one too many times....

First he left the course for a few seconds to take a pee. He now knows that he's been seen on video cameras, aka more than one, so he's changed his story that now it's he left the course for a while in search of a bathroom...for a doctor, he's really not that smart.

You've got to come up with better stuff than that. Maybe if you ran 3:45, but not a sub 3 at age 70. Ed Whitlock and Gene Dykes he is not.

I'm pushing 60 and fighting injuries and praying to get under 3 even by 1 second and I know the odds are against me. This guy takes several breaks, losing valuable minutes, not seconds, and he thinks people who know running will believe this. It's almost comical!!!!

Hats off to the main people on this thread who did the majority of the work, great stuff.

Great tribute post to Ed Whitlock as well, he was the man!

I'm glad that I was the spark that inspired deadesq and doubler to put in the work required to finally put this dirtbag to rest. Incredible work once again!

It’s just so pathetic to see Meza lurking (skulking!) on the sidewalk waiting to slip back on to the course. What a dishonest, depraved man.

There is no way that Meza’s fellow coaches at Loyola didn’t know about his cheating. They happily enjoyed the notoriety and praise that came their way as a result of Meza’s “accomplishments.” The school website ran a laudatory article just a few months ago about his world record setting performance.

Now that the truth comes out, Loyola lies and aids the cover-up by claiming he resigned in June.

The man coaches at your school for 30 years! You ran an article on his amazing Phoenix marathon a few months ago!

Have some integrity Loyola! Do the right thing. Condemn his actions. Hold yiur other coaches accountable...at minimum for allowing him to speak to the team to proclaim his innocence last week.
