Exactly, which is why I am ambivalent about it. It is aggravating that entry level jobs that pay are closed to some people, but I am past that point in my career (as I would think most of the posters here would be as well).

While under qualified assistants get paid, they rarely pan out long term. Many don't find a way to be successful when out on their own, and the ones who can win and develop often leave the profession for other reasons anyway.

As a coach it is possible to have children and a spouse who works; but that spouse has to be the primary care giver. This career chews up family men, but it is relentlessly brutal for family oriented women. I can't even think of one full time, Division I track coach who is a female with children older than school age (I know they are out there, but they are not many). Women leave this sport, because of the work/life balance disparity (and that is not changing anytime soon).

Word is he followed his girlfriend to her next location. Bummer as he was getting the distance crew headed in the right direction.

The thrust of identity politics into hiring practices has proven that skin color or gender is more important in hiring right now than ability. Many jobs are going to women or minorities that are not as qualified for the job as other candidates, specifically because they fill a quota. As a track and field fan, I have lost any faith in NCAA track and field as an institution and believe that talented high school runners should just skip this step and get with a pro coach as soon as possible. Lack of quality coaching outside of a handful of programs is showing this to be a next step in the direction of college cross and track.

I get where you’re coming from, it does make it sound like only white males are qualified but that’s not the case. What the case is, is that only qualified white males get screwed out of the position. So I don’t believe every minority hire is under qualified its just if the hire is under qualified its most likely to be a minority/women. Because I’m confident any experienced minority or women is at a quality program.

In one hypothetical I could understand in a situation where there was an ALL WHITE MALE STAFF (ugh, like totally cringing just thinking of it!) and there was an opening for an assistant. Admin would then likely nudge the Director to "diversify".

Cool, no problem with that. Let's say there were two candidates, one male and one female. If there were incredibly similar in terms of qualifications, literally no one would have an issue giving the nod to the well qualified woman. I challenge anyone to find disfavor in a situation like this.

There are tons of D2 coaches toiling to climb the ranks - doing things the right way, winning, proving their worth and they will never get an opportunity because they have testicles or not enough melanin.

Simply HANDING these highly coveted positions to a underqualified [whomever] used to show that at least they were volunteering at multiple schools. However now? Some individuals are simply waltzing into career destination jobs at 26, 27 years old.

3-5 years later it's a *shrug* of the shoulders and a "meh - I don't like coaching anymore" bye :)

With so much of NCAA Track & Field pivoting on recruiting and at the direction/subordination of Administration, we know it's a game of social engineering in the guise of "diversity". If this sport was actually judged rightfully upon the outcome?

Agree with everything you say here. It’s the same as high schools giving their jobs to those that already work at the school rather then someone more qualified. Preferential treatment when hiring coaches doesn’t serve the athletes and isn’t that the point of having a coach?

When I watch the sport at the collegiate level for the last 40 years....I see mostly black people at the NCAA Championships, not white. Only a white guy would think that they need to be the majority of the coaches. White males aren't the majority in the sport. Maybe 20% tops.
