Breaking shoetuber news: In a shocking move, SJD has turned off the comments on this latest video. We have never seen this before. What are the DGR discord members paying for? How will he select his comment of the day?
Curious how much Ran to Japan (Barraclough) is getting paid by Brooks now that he signed with them. He knows it's more for his YouTube channel popularity than his 2:14:52 PR, but any guesses? I think $20k, some travel money, and gear would be reasonable, with performance bonusses thrown in. Or am I way off??

Looks like he turned them back on. 0 comments though. I wonder if it was a mistake that comments were turned off. Maybe because the video raises the "oh you come from a RICH RICH family" topic again.

Could easily be simply free gear, travel/accom for certain, Brooks chosen races, and an affiliate link for the site.
What is the boy gonna do? Turn them down and go to Nike or someone? It's not like these people have much bargaining power

It’s an interesting one for sure, but I think RTJ could turn them down if he thinks it’s nothing special. His channel is only gonna get bigger. He has something. There’s just some charisma and star power you can’t put your finger on. He has it. The X factor i guess.
Only other one who rivals him is Bester who whilst I don’t know the ins and outs seems to have some sort of relationship with Adidas. It seems like Adidas just adores his charm & popularity with beginner runners and elites alike. From meeting him at Winchester parkrun he is such a nice guy and so motivating. Thank you Nick
also curious on speculation of what RTJ signed for with brooks lol. i feel like it has to be more than just gear and travel accom. he said its a 50/50 athlete/influencer split contract so there must be some guaranteed money in there. i do wonder if its something measly like $10-20k which is honestly pennies but i guess anything is nice for being able to focus on running...although i feel like you need at least 30-40k to live annually...but i guess people can scrap by on 15k/yr if they are very frugal and dont care for any luxuries..
or do we think somehow RTJ managed to snag like 60-80k out of brooks? i assume no way but who knows with all the NDAs around running contracts and that we really have no idea of what the normal athletes get paid aside from guessing. i so wish salaries were public info like other sports lol

It's interesting, as I bet he has more purchasing influence as a generational talent like Keely Hodgkinson.
Keely is a track superstar and sports-personality of the year; however, she hardly ever races and is fairly dull. I can't imagine having her as the face of Nike influencing buying choices.
I wonder if it's more bragging rights to have the best athlete in the world signed to your brand.

I wouldn't be surprised if it is more than the numbers you are quoting. As Jake alluded to in his video on the topic, what return on investment do brands actually get when a fully sponsored East African with no public profile podiums or gets 2:06 in a marathon? Is anyone actually going out and buying a pair of Asics because say...Vincent Kipkemoi finished 3rd in Tokyo? Bear in mind, there are a tonne of sponsored athletes who get nowhere near the podium but are still sponsored because they 'run fast'. Then these athletes might be seen a full year later wearing the brand again. Whereas Jake will be bringing eyeballs to Brooks year round and will presumably review the gear etc. Some of his videos have hundreds of thousands of views- how many people actually watched the Tokyo marathon in the UK? And then made a shoe choice because of it? It's a no brainer to me- I think Brooks are smart to make a deal like this.

Brookes have made the same deal as OC have with Philly Bowden by the looks of it. Part influencer and part athlete deal. It's the best way for these brands to go. I did Boston this year for the first time, and have since followed John Korir on instagram and it's hilarious to watch him navigate it. And yet Asics will be paying him big bucks! The return on their investment will be close to zero I presume.
But spending one tenth of that on an influencer out of their marketing budget and athlete budget combined is much more savvy.
It's a careful choice though and the brand has to pick an athlete who is non offensive to the majority and also likely to be competitive. I imagine ben is running is probably just that bit too slow to get one of these deals and Scullion for example aged out of his pro career at just the wrong moment in history. If he was 10 years younger, he would have done well.

Kenyans don't get 'big bucks'. It won't be nothing but it certainly won't be lots by Western standards. Super big names yes, but random marathon runners (even those winning majors) less so.
I was friends with an athlete 5-6 years back who was a regular in Kenyan national teams and their base contract with Adidas was 4k USD a year. Not a known name outside of hardcore fans but a very good athlete.
Hard to disagree with Adidas decision as per the reasoning given above. Who is buying shoes because of a 'random' Kenyan?

Depends on the influencer and what happens with them. If they alienate their audience like Kofuzi and Thomas from Believe in the Run, then maybe it's not the greatest investment. If they develop a long term audience with deep loyalty to the brand, absolutely worth it. And it's not the Phily Bowden model everyone is copying, it's the Sage Canaday one!

It’s the Nick Bester model tbh. Very popular with all groups. Or maybe allie O
