Lowering yourself to insults only makes you look bad. Their immunity was given to them by Congress and it can be taken away. Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act gives them immunity. So we the people through Congress can take it away. Sounds like you are the one who needs lessons.
However, even private spaces like Facebook and Twitter can become public for purposes of free speech. How? In 1980 in Pruneyard Shopping Center v. Robins, the Supreme Court ruled that a privately owned shopping center where local high school students were soliciting petition signatures was a quasi-public space and that the shopping center could not use trespass laws to keep the students from exercising their peaceful free speech rights inside the shopping center.
Facebook in many ways is also a public space where people congregate to gain information . Some might argue that just like a shopping mall, people should be allowed to express themselves freely on Facebook, Twitter, etc, as long as it is peaceful. Let me address your original question first since you jumped the gun. “Should we just ban everyone you disagree with?”. Of course not and that was not what I suggested when I clearly singled out trump for his lying.
Thanks for the shopping space analogy but this isn’t 1980 and social media is much more complicated than high school students soliciting petitions. As it stands, FB and others ARE private companies with their own set of rules, which currently is a protected mechanism.
The outrage over the trump ban is bat$hit. I think it’s a great test for everyone. These profit driven platforms end up folding to the will of the majority, and possibly much faster than with the conflicted politicians you suggest are exercising we the people’s will. It’s arguably very democratic.
Parler was happily embracing trump, evidence that there is room for even the scummiest because there are always enough people who demand it. It’s just that in this case the platforms needed to keep Parler running had enough and pulled the rug. Nothing is stopping some VCs and trump from setting up the pipes for him to continue spewing his nonsense 24/7. That would be up to them.
And as for “peaceful free speech”... 😂 come on man
