that would be a good result. But there's news like this - texas and arizona hospitals starting to fill up. That would suggests the deaths are coming, just not here yet.

Just jumping into this discussion... comparing across countries percent urban population is highly correlated with per capita GDP (and covid cases) in interested reader's analysis whereas population density is not. That's because percent urban is a measure of level of development and population density is not. For example, Bangladesh and India are densely populated but still not highly urbanized because a lot of the population still lives in the countryside in villages. This is even more true is Sub-Saharan Africa.

But within the US I suspect there is a correlation between density and percent urban since level of development differences between US states are insignificant. So I think density could definitely be a factor in explaining both covid19 and political affiliation.

In the US the analysis should ideally be done at the county level. It would be interesting break it out by urban/suburban/rural.

Ideas:

Poor people had to go to work whereas rich people could work from home

poor people lived in crowded apartments

Poor people were in worse health, whereas rich people exercised and were thinner

more rich people could leave the city...some areas basically depopulated. So it's hard to determine density.

Completely agree with all of that. But there is also a relationship between voting patterns and covid in that blue states have higher rates as do urban areas (which vote blue). So it's more complicated than just density or wealth alone.

Another thing to keep in mind is that a lot of the deaths have been in nursing homes. The quality of care in these facilities varies tremendously so wealth will be a factor there as well.

One of my Chilean colleagues did a very detailed analysis for Santiago, with similar findings. In the beginning, their outbreak was mainly in wealthier parts of the city (presumably a result of more international travel, if I may speculate). They locked down affected areas and had the outbreak largely under control. Then, according to her, interactions at public markets went out of control, and the outbreak restarted, and now is among the world leaders (not in a good way). Today, as I understand it, the outbreak has mainly affected (devastated) poorer neighbourhoods.

Chile has a much more stratified social order than US; the poor are really poor (with virtually no possibility or escaping poverty) and the professional class live very well. The broad "working class" is quite poor by US standards. Wealth concentrates much more strongly in a smaller ruling class. Many in the working class have menial jobs for very low pay (nearly every professional family has a live-in Chilean nanny for example), and they tend to work far from their homes. Most of the city commutes, and the transit system is highly used, as is the informal "taxi" system (I forget the proper name) many people use to ride share from the suburbs to their jobs in the city.

Chile is highly urbanized (87.6%), ranking among the top 20 countries in the world, but has very low overall population density (24.8 / sq. km), ranking well outside the top 100.

And as a good counter example to back up adelaide's point, Bangladesh has very low urban population (36.5%), in the bottom ~ 30 in the world, but very high population density (>1200 / sq. km), which is by far the highest among countries with large populations (> 20 million say), the next being South Korea (528), India (450) and the Philippines (353).

I agree, and if I find time I will remove NY and NJ states. It's much harder to pull out NYC in the data sets I've been using. It will definitely remove some of the difference.

I'm starting to regret having made and shared those graphs. I thought it was an interesting question to explore, and I found the outcome interesting, but without a deeper understanding of context and cause / effect, it's too easy for people to draw lazy conclusions (as I think I've been guilty myself).

aaaaand more of the same.

Improvement in the US but worsening in the world.

US 7 day rolling average of daily deaths fell again, this time a substantial amount. Down to 821.

World 7 day rolling average of deaths rose again, this time by a substantial amount. Up to 4,444.

Both numbers have been moving consistently in that direction for weeks.

Big question is when/if the surge in hospitalizations in the American South and West will start causing deaths. So far, not so much. Maybe nursing homes are being protected better? Or maybe it's still early.

Worldwide daily counts of new cases hitting sharply new highs. Not sure how much of that is due to more testing.

In the US daily counts of new cases are stable or falling very slightly.

No changes in the rankings of nations or US states that I am tracking.
