btw, there is some interesting research that suggests letting highly educated people in as immigrants isn't very useful. Because they have money but no connections and often little english. So they basically retire, instead of the shame of taking work at a lower level of salary and much less prestige.

The Biden admin actually tried to do that - to stop asylum seekers from being allowed into the country but US courts banned the practice, saying it was illegal. So the Biden admin's hands are tied. We have to allow asylum seekers in and give them a hearing.

But once in the US, no matter how you got here, if you ask for asylum you are granted a hearing. Around 40% of requests are granted. The US simply cannot kick you out immediately if you ask for asylum. Repubs don’t seem to understand that. They think it’s Biden’s choice to keep the immigrants in the country. Despite courts ordering Biden not to be so harsh and quick to deport. Opposite of what most Rs think.
