strangely enough most runners own a running watch

cadence isnt an 'option'. its on all watches and records regardless.

you can pick up a half decent watch for a little over $100. not that expensive at all really. in fact its an incredibly small investment in order to properly document your record breaking achievements.

As someone said earlier in this thread, "extraordinary achievements requrie extraordinary proof" so the onus is on Amy to prove she ran 521 miles on a treadmill in 7 days. I've no doubt she covered a lot of distance in 7 days but I do doubt it was 521 miles.

Just buy a relatively inexpensive watch, preferably two and have the required independent witnesses.

Better still (see the post above) I'm sure if they reached out to Pete Kostelnick he'd be more than happy to advise how to do it, he'd probably even lend his equipment.

It's interesting that many years ago we could just take somebodies word for having run ultra record.

As an example Mike Cudahy set the first Pennine way record under 3 days. 270 miles over the fells. He had company for most of the run. Those pioneers of ultra running had a totally different mentality though. He said that if someone said htey had run a certain record he believed them and didn't need proof

There was little publicity surrounding the attempts. Beyond a small group of like minded individuals few would know about it. Mike had about 7 previous attempts at the record when he didn't even manage to finish. The Rob Young's of this world seem to have a 100% success record

I know a guy has run well over 100 marathon races and several ultras and hardly gets injured. His first attempt at a 100 mile ultra ended in failure.

These fraudsters seem to have no running background and can suddenly 'run' 70 miles a day with no problem

They are setting these 'world records' proclaiming that they basically the best in the world but somehow don't want to prove it in an organised race

This is the telling thing but another is not understanding the difference between an organised race and a run of whatever duration outside of a race.

The simple faking of GPS data trope seems to rumble on without a shred of evidence, the people simply hide behind dogma or unrealistic demands for money to avoid having to prove anything.

The proclaimed weight loss is another thing I am struggling to get my head around.

Is it possible to lose 28 pounds in 7 days and still run at world record pace?

I don't know what her starting weight was and I'm aware that women carry more body fat than men but by the looks of her that seems an unhealthily large percentage of her total weight.

I would think that it's impossible to loose 28 pounds in 7 days...even for the heavy set runners that would be impossible. She would need to monitor weight closely during the event as weight gain could be a sign of Hyponatremia and too much weight loss could well be a sign of dehydration.

28 pounds in a week would mean that she's either severely dehydrated or has suffered some significant muscle atrophy. Either would make it VERY hard to complete the event!

70 miles a day?

That is nothing for Robert Young. He ran over 11,000 miles in his very first year of running, which is an average of 211 miles per week for 52 weeks in a row, with no rest days.

I like the Brit Daniel Johnson writing about Robert Young's 373 mile World Record for longest continuous run of nearly 4 days without stopping. He did most of this WR with no one watching him. That is a big surprise.

There is one way to settle this once and for all. We should issue Dave and Amy a 'Mike Rossi Challenge'. We probably won't be able to match the 200,000 dollars offered to Rossi but if we pool our money we should be able to come up with a significant amount. Lets face it, we're not likely to loose our money. I have family in Manchester so I'd be willing to fly over and be part of the witness team.

Yep Robert Young was the real deal ...of the cheaters. The King of the cheaters. Amy Hughes didn't even write a book about her cheating but Robert did.

this interview was not long after Amy 'broke' the record. A few interesting points:

1) the treadmill reset itself after a certain amount of time.

2) Amy had only 1 shower in the week.

3) on the first day she was well behind schedule - I'm guessing that perhaps she managed 60 instead of the 75 average she needed.

4) She had bad blisters after day 1 (just like someone else).

5) On day 2 she had a row with Dave who wanted to pull her out. She ran for 20 hours that day.

6) She was still behind with a couple of days to go and Dave was constantly telling her she had to up the pace.

7) She managed to pop a few 'quick' 10K's to get back on track.

8) She got so far ahead that she could afford a nap and take it easy the last 4 hours or so.
