You must be joking. This is a guy who has admitted to showing up to practice and meets drunk, drove the team in the van while drunk, had many inappropriate relationships with athletes, was getting drunk with athletes and was actively trying to sleep with even more athletes.

Anyone who says he deserves another chance should be lobotomized.

I would give him a shot as an assistant. The drinking thing isn’t something you can’t overcome. Anyone who has coached as long as I have knows the stories of some of our greatest coaches in the Hall of Fame. The dating former athletes was years ago and it’s been pointed out that many of our best coaches are married to former athletes. We all knew he dated Shook. They lived together for like 8 years and raised kids together. He admitted it.

I would hire him. He is very successful and has a great personality. One of the most well-liked coaches and most everyone at the convention would agree.

Thing is, why come back? I don’t know what he makes as an actor but he seems pretty successful. Has to be way more than coaching particularly as an assistant

A big part of the problem is dumb ass sport supervisors younger than the coaches they are hiring and firing allowing young and first time head coaches to hire "who they want" which almost always means, their friends!

With track and field it is amazing there are only 6 paid coaches. All those athletes. There is a big movement in college baseball to add a 3rd paid assistant. They are understaffed too. With upwards of 120 athletes in some combined programs it is crazy there’s only 6 paid

I have never ever heard this type of criticism about who a Head Coach should hire for a glorified administrative assistant / director of operations position. Ever. Who the hell needs a great director of operations for the team to be successful? WTF

For most programs this is true. Not at Stanford. And not for a guy who’s demonstrated multiple times he can’t manage a robust program. Chris Miltenberg rarely told Jess Riden what to do - that’s why he brought her to Chapel Hill. Neither did Beth Alford Sullivan & neither did Greg Metcalf.

Two NCAA team titles in Track & Field at a major program. I would say that is managing a robust program. How many NCAA team titles in Track & Field does Stanford have?

Of course he is going to deny it because it's the only illegal thing he was accused of. And his favorites will back him up because they wanted him to stay around.

But the fact is he was essentially drunk 24-7. He might have been less drunk driving the vans than he was in other instances, but drunk is drunk. They guy was a drunk who showed a blatant disregard for health and well-being of his team.

There are very few of us still running and would even come to Letsrun You can be the only possible person posting. None of the rest of us have anything bad to say about Coach. That’s why we went to newspaper. He was already gone. We just wanted the truth out there. There was more than a dozen of us that offered to go on camera. You got what you wanted. You were obsessed then and obviously still. Stop embarrassing yourself. This is so obvious.
