He should defend it considering he ALREADY looked into it and determined there's nothing wrong with it. Good for him - don't accept the media framing on the issue.
You're not defending his defense. Tell us why it should be pointed out to students that slaves learned useful skills? We've heard Desantis' take. His voice, his lips, no media framing (typical lame blame-the-media claim). His defense su**ed. What's yours?
And you know, pre-Trump, I likely would have given the curriculum planners the benefit of the doubt on this. As in, "Come on, they couldn't have really meant THAT - partially soft-pedaling slavery by pointing out useful skills gained. What's the defense? What am I missing? I'm listening."
But the Trump era has erased ALL of that benefit of the doubt. Can I imagine some Desantis-appointed, Trump and Marjorie Taylor Green-admiring sycophants corrupting a curriculum and pandering to the racists who give them money and validation and votes? YES. YES. YES.

Do you believe slaves never learned skills that they applied after they escaped or were freed, or that this wasn't relevant to the era where 4 million slaves were freed and needed to be integrated into society, or that it just shouldn't be taught for some reason?
The FL history curriculum has 45 references to slavery, 119 references to slaves, and 1 reference to "skills" that you are triggered about.

Might it be the same as point out all the "skills" Trump is likely to receive in prison?

What does Trump have to do with any of this? I mean at least you admit you have Trump derangement syndrome but try to put it aside for one moment and think critically. The curriculum has 191 references to slavery and was put together by a panel of African-American historians led by Dr. Allen West of MSU. But I understand you have the word of the esteemed historian Dr. Kamala Harris so why do any other thinking beyond that?
FUN FACTS: 1) After the 2020 presidential election, Trump’s OWN campaign paid more than $600,000 for research that undercut many of his most explosive voter fraud claims. The research was never made public, but the “Project 2020” report conducted by the Berkeley Research Group has been obtained by prosecutors investigating the January 6 insurrection on the Capitol. 2) A second firm was later hired by Trump's OWN campaign to study election fraud claims in the weeks after the 2020 election, and the founder of the firm was recently questioned by the Justice Department about his work DISPROVING the claims. Ken Block, founder of the firm Simpatico Software Systems, studied more than a dozen voter fraud theories and allegations for Trump’s campaign in late 2020 and found, and I quote: “No substantive voter fraud was uncovered in my investigations looking for it, nor was I able to confirm any of the outside claims of voter fraud that I was asked to look at.” Then, he said this — “Every fraud claim I was asked to investigate was false.” The Trump campaign, according to federal records, show the Trump campaign paid Block’s firm more than $750,000 in six payments. The first, for $390,000. I'll let you do the math. 3) Another Trump campaign-commissioned report said analysts also CONTRADICTED Trump’s claims that some 1,500 ballots came from dead voters and that over 42,000 voted twice in Nevada. While the report does not outright state that Biden won the election, the analysis said they did NOT have evidence to substantiate fraud claims about Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin and Nevada results. So THREE FIRMS, all hired by Trump's own campaign, proved all of Trump voter fraud claims FALSE!!

They should have zero references to stupid, insulting sh**. Not one. Not more.
And here's a thought: Telling kids what slaves did ALREADY tells them what skills they gained. Obviously. One need not make sure that you point out how they might help them IF they're ever free. That's 100% obvious and unnecessary. And the alternative is, again, stupid and insulting.
AND purposeful. They're pandering to their base by "getting" the liberal scholars and citizens who will complain about this.
Perhaps they could just stick to complaining about affirmative action and DEI nazis and toxic workplace consultants and....

Funny we're talking about education and learning. Here's a good essay question:
"Regarding the highlighted above, since Donald Trump has come on the scene politically, have you noticed any changes in the United States?"
And I guess that your answer be: "Uhhh, not really. Some guy was talking about the 'Trump Era' in an apparently negative manner, but I really didn't know what he meant. Even when he mentioned some guy named Desantis pandering to mouth breathers."

You could provide the "skills" defense of the esteemed Dr. West. Go ahead, we'd be happy to read it. Can't imagine he hasn't been asked, since Ron did such a good job with the question.
And unlike Trump, Harris has absolutely nothing to do with my view on this issue. I heard that she went down to FL and called some people idio** over this. Probably well-deserved.

The board was led by Dr. William Allen of MSU, not Allen West lol. Sorry, mistyped.

If you want me to save you a google search I can do that. From a woke friendly source no less.
NPR's Steve Inskeep talks to William Allen, who helped write Florida's new K-12 social studies curriculum, which is getting a lot of criticism for its portrayal of African American history.

But that only proves just how deeply embedded the DEEP STATE is throughout all of American Oligarch society!
Right wingers loved the attention Trump got. He was their orange rock star. That was until the attention turned to a floodgate of serious legal problems.
Now they call Trump attention TDS. Everyone needs to move on. They say. .
What you call TDS, I call 70% of the country unabashedly and thoroughly enjoying seeing a lifetime narcissist conman who has abused his power and position to lie, grift hurt and destroy others finally getting his taste.
And the cherry on the top of this Sundae is the way he used his power of the highest office in the US to punch down at his “enemies”. Now he cries like a victim.
Just in case anyone thought that Trump might have pivoted to a more moral road with his legal pressure, we just learned that Trump's super Pac (Political Action Committee) has paid 40 million to his legal defense. That's right. When Trump does his rallies and tells you he is running for President and he needs your help because "they are indicting you". He is conning you Trumpers to pay for his legal representation. He is a multi-billionaire right?
It is just another grift.
You can toss this story in a pile of hundreds other stories that would be a huge PR nightmare for any other former president or candidate but because it is Trump, well it's just a minor nothing burger because there are so many other crimes and grift to cover.
The economy is doing GREAT by so many indicators and the Republicans are locked into a candidate that will bring them down to defeat. The Republicans have no one to step in to save their party from the inevitable Trump collapse.
The greatest weakness of the Democrat party is that don't they know how to package, celebrate and sell the good news of the economy. This is the one area that they could take lessons from Trump and the Republicans. Most people don't know how well the economy is doing and the blame for that is the very ineffective democratic messaging.
Remember when it was routine to hear Trump had just canned the defense secretary or national security advisor or attorney general? He had four chiefs of staff, four national security advisors and seven communication directors. it was a weekly sh!tshow. And those that served for him were the loudest screamers that Trump was unfit and inept.
