Back around 1990, IIRC. I'm fairly sure that the UAA used to have nine schools. I think Brandeis joined a year or two after the other eight; at the time, that meant six ranked xc teams (UR, Wash, Emory, CMU, CWRU, BU) in a nine-team conference.

The only conference that rivalled it for competitiveness (at the DIII level) was the Wisconsin DIII schools.

JH was indeed a founding member of the UAA, Brandeis was not. I too sometimes wonder about the sustainability of the conference due to the geographic expanse (Boston to St. Louis, Atlanta to Chicago), but it's also worth mentioning these are schools that have rather large endowments due to their academic prestige. I know for a fact that CMU has gone through great lengths recently to step up their athletic program (new AD, new facilities) so I do not imagine they are too worried about the costs incurred through travel.

Realistically, at least from my perspective, it meant that during the season we would go to local meets at Kent State, Akron, Bucknell, etc. and not to the larger meets at Boston U/Reggie Lewis, and so on.

Technically Brandeis was not a founding member, but they joined before the first year of UAA competition, and were at the first UAA Cross Championships.

What does his speed over 800 or range have to do in comparison to Moen or Yuot? Moen was a better collegiate xc runner, so was Yuot. Up to this point at least. I think you fail to realize how fast 23:30 is. He won't run that fast, even if he tries. Who cares if they have a fraction of his speed. Moen has run 2830 and Yout real low 29s. Id say their endurance is far superior. 14:25 5kers dont run 23:30.

He is the favorite, but he is not a lock, and will not run as fast as some people think.

Kosgei could have broken 14 last year pretty easily. He ran 8:41 in the steeple. He ran 14:25 at Nationals, and looked like he was jogging. He probably ran a 25 sec. last 200. At NESCACs last weekend, he beat Jesse Faller by 40 seconds, who has run 14:31.

This guy is right. Kosgei is better than 14:25 5k capability. He's like Will Leer. coulda gone under 14 last year. His 8:43 shows that.

But Kosgei can be beat. If he is on top of his game I dont think he will be lose. But if he is off, I think there are three guys who can take him.

Kosgei ran multiple 5ks last year and didnt come close to breaking 14. And who cares if he beat someone who ran 1430 last year? Irrelevant on what he could do in track. There are plenty of 8:45 steeplers that can not break 14. Sure, he may be able to do it this year. But he hasn't yet, so to say he could have when he wasn't close is ridiculous. And regarding the Will Lear comment, he was in a fast paced race his senior year and couldnt do it either. 1500 guys dont always make good 5kers.

Peter Kosgei is a phenom. He is a once in a generation type runner in division three. Moen, Yuot, Dan Mayer (13:54 guy from North Central from the early 90's). All great athletes. I believe Kosgei will be better than them all in the end. That 14:25 at nationals last year was remarkable in that it was so easy. He actually hates running that distance. If you can believe it, he opted to run it instead of the 1500 or 800 at nationals because he wanted to redeem his loss at xc nationals to Sigel. I timed his final 200 myself and got 24 high. He dusted everyone including multi- national champion Sigel, Willy Kaul, etc.

Since he is only entering his junior year he has a lot still to show. He has the talent to run well under 14 in the 5k, but does not enjoy that distance so who knows if he will ever do that. I believe he has a chance to break 4 for the mile like Paranya, Leer, etc. I think he has a distant shot at Symmond's 800m record. Granted he has a ways to go to get that, but 1:46 is not unrealistic.

Either way, instead of looking for ways to knock the kid, enjoy the experience. You don't get to watch this type of athlete compete very often. Yuot was awesome to watch. Moen oustanding. Missy Buttry out of this world.

I have a feeling that there are many close mens teams, so I'm predicting that scoring will be unusually high. Winning team in the 160 range, followed by a cluster of teams in the 250-300 range.

And, I'm not believing any national rankings this week. They're historically incorrect after maybe the top 2 or 3 teams.

Teams:

North Central--too strong--will pack in 4 AA's

Cortland--within 10 points

Stevens Point--strong spread gets it done--20 to 30 points back of Cortland

Calvin--few points back

La Crosse--few points back
