I'm an old guy. I ran under 15:00 a number of times on the track, but never 14:30. I think my best 5k was on the way to a 30:00 10k. I went through in 14:56, but I was on the roads. I ran under 15:00 in XC many times, but that was 18 years ago. I was mostly a 1500 meter guy and never really thought much about the 5k. I never felt that I was very good at it or could score points. The last time I ran under 15:00 was probably 12 years ago in a road race. Running under 15:00 was a big deal in high school. I never did it. My best was 15:14 back in 1985. It was a record for a number of years until Goucher broke it in 1992 (I think?). I think Goucher is still the only person to break 15 unless the kid from South High broke it this year? My high school year Ruben Reina (sp) ran 14:5? at Kinney. Those were the days. I think the kids today are much faster.

Gotta love this type of stuff.
According to a rankings list I recently read, that would put you in the top 30 in the world this year.
And you feel no compunction about supplying neither a name nor any evidence whatsoever to support your claim.
Let me try: I ran 45:23 for 10 miles recently. There. Prove me wrong.
You're an idiot. 44:30 for 15k isn't very good.
I broke it twice. My best is 14:41 on the track, but that was earlier this year with no tempo work or speedwork. I will not speculate as to how much faster I could have gone, being that in high-school we don't race it much, and when I raced at USATF Junior Nationals I was quite ill.
this is great - 43 postsso far (mine is 44) and only 6 posts give times and the meet. only 2 give links to the results.
this board is more full of shit than i thought.
for the record i have never broken 15:00. i have a 5k PR of mid-16s. i know, i suck.
Ran 14:49 in the 2nd half of a 30:11 10k, Drake Relays.
I ran a 13:58 at UTEP in the early nineties.

Hey Kevin, how's it going? You still living in the desert, winning all of the local 5k's?
Back on topic: you've got me by a few ticks in the 5k (14:58 on the track), but we all know the steeple is where it's at...
Yep still in Victorville. Getting ready for a spring marathon. Finally healthy after a rough last 3-4 years :o
Drop me an email. I will be doing a few XC meets with the CalCoast team. Whichever meets do not conflict with my teams meets.

very funny!
First time was in 2002 -- 14:59.64 at the Ken Foreman Invite in Seattle (not going to bother finding a link).
I don't understand all the skepticism about times. 35 guys broke 30:00 at Stanford this year, so there must be 100s of sub-15 guys in North America (never mind the UK, Europe, Australia, NZ, etc). If we assume that most of these guys are typical running nerds, is it that unreasonable to think that there are enough to substantially populate this board?
If I have skepticism, it's for the number of people claiming to routinely and consistently run >100 mile weeks. I've found that to be a much harder task than breaking 15. When I was in university I rarely went over 80, and I was considered a high volume guy.
Latest time I've gone sub 15:00 was a road race in February in Hyde Park, London. 14:54 for 2nd place behind Huw Lobb (GB World Championship Marathon runner), results here:
http://www.serpentine.org.uk/rdb/showrace.php?race=1970
Training had been 3 months of consistent 70-80mile weeks with 2 track/grass speed sessions and 1 hill session per week plus XC races (UK ones, so 5-9 muddy miles) some weekends.
PB is 14:28 which I hope to revise later this summer.
1442, 17 years old, Track race, 40miles a week max. (2 track work outs - one long, one speed, easy running for 40mins in between, hills and friday rest)
Theres a lot of posts but not many links or names to back it all up.
ok a few old timers before the internet era..no probs..but all these youngsters?
Typical let's run posters?
and plenty of people posting times slower than 15min, whats the point? nobody cares. it was below 15min right?
anyway that counts me out.
I have yet to not break 15:00 in a college track 5k. My best came at the 2004 Sea Ray Relays. I finished 4th in 14:28 behind Anthony Fam., Joe Driscoll i think, and Andy Baksa nipped me at the line. I am doing a lot more training now, but at that time my max mileage was 75 and mainly in the 60's, plus many injuries. I hope to break 14:00 this year.

Been training 35 years. On the best day of my life I couldn't brake 16.
I think a just as important question to ask is 'what % of people on here fudge their PR.' Isnt it odd how so many people have run 14:45 and 14:30? And I love when someone states their PR (and its not like Im asking what their 2k or 4k PR is) as 'about xx:xx.' Everyone knows what their honest 5k or marathon or whatever PR is if they actually raced that distance.
Have not, and will not break 15:00 for 5K. 16:00 is a pipedream. 16:30 is a possibility, but I've never even done that.
14:57 in my last collegiate competition - 2000 Outdoor Heps
I trained mostly for the 1500 (PR of 3:51), and I decided to hop in the 5k because I didn't make the final for the 1500.
