I think the basic rationale for speed/interval work for OP has been lost in this thread.
Interval training will help lower OP's 10k time (which is his stated goal) because, in a nutshell, it will improve his basic fitness and VO2 m ax so that his easier running becomes more efficient.
It's not about how to become a good or super fast sprinter per se, but rather to convey that the act of incorporating serious regular speed work will maximize one's distance running potential.
