Some people are just born with absolute garbage cardio ability. I played basketball regularly from 8 to 11. I could run a 29s 200m easy.
At 12 years old, 5'6" 125 pounds, I ran a mile as fast as I could in 7th grade gym class. I clocked 10:30, and never got below 9:30 the entire year. I definitely remember some fat kids getting in the 8 min range from the start.
Err, maybe because they've done a lot of gym work but not much running?

I think this is the right answer!
If a person spends their entire 30s sitting at a desk at work, sitting in a car on her way home from work, sitting on a couch at home, and then sleeping in a bed at night, it should not be shocking when she is not developed as a runner.
Even if she piles a few months of consistent training, onto decades of sitting at desks, what you get, is probably a shuffle, and not much of a gallop.
And after one year’s worth of consistent training, i am still wondering whether all those years of desks, cars, elevators, and couches still win out. My guess is, a faster shuffle is a good guess, for how things turn out.
Thin is about controlling your weight. Fast is about controlling your training.

+1. I know a few sub-14 guys who are 40-ish, and due to 10-15 years of desk jobs could never touch me in a 5k again. I've got a good 25 years of consistent conditioning under my belt that belies my decidedly non-chiseled physique.
