Congrats to Clayton "Young" - Is Mr Young at 25 the oldest NCAA champ in decades?

I know back in the day with UTEP that many of the Africans were quite old. For example, Olympic silver medallist Suleiman Nyambui was 29 when he graduated. But who is the last distance runner that was 25 when he won an NCAA title? I have no idea. Young actually is almost 26. His DOB is September 14th. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suleiman_Nyambui

No. You are the exception. You started school earlier than most. Most kids start Kindergarten when they are 5 years old and then turn 6 sometime during the school year. There are of course exceptions where some kids will start earlier than what is normal. I'm sure that the rules vary a little from place to place but I believe that most places require kids to be 5 years old before September 1 in order to start Kindergarten. Which means that kids with September birthdays are normally the oldest in the class and kids with August birthdays are normally the youngest. This also means that kids with Sept-May birthdays are normally 18 when they graduate and those with June-Aug birthdays are normally 17 when they graduate. There are a few kids that will start a year earlier or a year later but the vast majority will fit this rule.

here is a table from wikipedia stating that most high school seniors are 17 or 18, and that most college seniors are 21 or 22. That seems generally correct, and I don't want to become as old as this Young guy by looking any harder. You'd have to go to the NCAA for redshirt statistics. I personally didn't know many, and it isn't even allowed in the Ivy League although there may be a very rare medical exemption.

Foolish statement about Fisher. Who by the way raced and crushed Mantz in High School. If Fisher were a sophomore now in college at 22 years old, he would destroy everyone over the next couple of years and at multiple distances and become the greatest American collegiate distance runner EVER. He would be capable of running sub 13:05, sub 28, sub 3:35, sub 1:47 at 25 years old while in the NCAA.

I didn't see anything in that table about the age when they started a grade. I guess that "around ages five or six" could mean four or seven. Almost everybody in my started my senior class at 16 or 17, and graduated at 17 or 18, although we had some 16 year old graduates. No matter, even if they graduate high school at 20, and do the 4 in 5, they'll still be younger than this guy from BYU.

Oklahoma City Univeristy has mastered getting older foreigners. Their women’s multiple national champ is 30 YEARS OLD.

Their top 5 are foreign, and 4 of them at 25 years or older. Their best runner has been to 3 colleges before OKC, and won’t even put his birthday on Facebook. He is around 28 years old or older.

i don't really have a problem with BYU having older athletes. it is clearly an advantage, but i don't think they're exploiting a loophole other systems aren't allowed to.

most starting kindergarten students are 4-5 years old. i was the oldest student in my grade (sept 20) save 3-4 times, and every year there were people more than a year younger than me.

I was only using that as an example of why missionaries use a red shirt year. Obviously Grant Fisher would kill it if he had more eligibility. You are missing the point man. A missionary can’t contribute in a month after they get home. They need to get back in shape. If you were only allowed exercise for 30 minutes a day for two years, you would want a redshirt year as well.
