Jim Ryun is a good suggestion. He was above 5 in the mile and maybe screwing around with the wrong kids smoking cigarettes at the time or just getting over that phase. Sophomore year he was a different beast.
Ryun ran a 58 second 440 in 8th grade.
He started cross country in 10th grade with a 5:38 mile, but then ended that cross country season 6th at state.
He won the mile in track season with 4:16, beating the previous winner and runner ups, Charlie Harper and Gene McLain.
So, he didn't start at the bottom, though he certainly did improve quite a bit.
