The economy should find a way for runners to be professional at a real job done by running. Like the running footman of the 19th century.
In very crowded cities with too much traffic for bike messengers, someone like Yuki would be KING. He'd be getting those important documents delivered on time all day.

If he had a real business job I would agree with his sentiment. But he had a cushy government desk job. Where he received a steady income, had low expectations consistent, and low hours.
Now he’ll have the pressure of running be his one source of income. Along with having lots of free time which is not always the best thing. One tends to eat more and do things that inhibit recovery.
I hope him the best but I doubt he will run a pr in the thon. If anything with all the time he has now it would be great to see him do more ultras and break those records.

Someone who takes its seriously, coming from a culture of taking everything as seriously as you can - to be the best - might have more willpower to not throw that away.
I don't know why anyone would be an amateur runner today.
It costs money to enter races, and its no hindrance to making the Olympics.
If there is a prize, and someone wants to buy you shoes, or lunch, just roll with it.
Just curious. Does anyone know his work hours before he became a full time runner? As someone who has tried to run while working full time I'm always curious how other who do the same manage it and how many hours they are really working.
When I ran 2:17 I was working about 40hrs a week. A few years ago I changed jobs and started working 50-55 hrs in a normal week. It was a huge adjustment and I had a couple mediocre years but now I'm back to 2:18 and hopefully faster. I dont have to do physical labor but am on my feet 25-33% of the time depending on the week.
I'm curious on the actual hours of guys who work a non running full time job and compete at a high level. I know Geb and Bekele have their business interests but but no idea how many hours they really work. I know a few trials caliber guys here in Cali who work full time but I think most of them are more in the 40hr a week range. Maybe there is already a thread on this.
I've always seen his work hours listed as either 1 PM to 9 or noon to 8.

Is that a normal work schedule in Japan. That seems crazy to me as you'd be doing one of your runs around 10 at night. Although I get up around 4:45 or earlier to run my main run which some would find equally crazy.

He ran before work and usually just once a day.
The phone thing baffles me. Would people really call him at work and berate him for a bad race? Couldn't he politely say this is a work line, do you have a work related question?

Not likely. Very few runners set a personal best in the marathon when their best time is 6 years ago.

It is very rare but it has been done. Ron Hill's best marathon going into 1969 when he ran 2:09 was 2:14 set in 1963. Bernie Allen ran 2:16:54 in 1969 which was his best until 1983 when he ran 2:15:31. It would be interesting if we could find people with the longest gaps between marathon PBs.
