I was maybe that dude yesterday (although maybe not because you eventually stopped and let me pass). You were stopped when I ran up and instead of letting me pass you ran on. You should've given me a gesture to indicate I could pass on the narrow singletrack we we're on. Your surges weren't really surges and I was trying to slow down anyway cuz I went out too fast for my long run. Anyway, it's awkward coming from behind and I apologise. No Biden creepiness intended.
I tend to have something a bit different: catching up to runners who then feel the need to speed up to stay ahead of you. That is annoying AF, mainly because you move to the left to pass them and then they speed up so you can’t pass, so you keep getting in this game.
I don’t mind runners who let me pass them, and then decide to keep up. They can be using you as motivation, which is all well and good.

Then I hear this runner approaching, and it turns out he's listening to a Sam Harris podcast too. So we match pace for a while, and then Sam Harris himself comes jogging along, listening to himself on a podcast. So we all ran along together.

I too was running, and saw a young female doing what looked like intervals. I decided to stay in stride with her. I pushed her pace just a little . After 5 of them, she said thanks. I just gave a lite pat on the butt and waved goodbye. All's good.
It's not ideal if you have a super precise route mapped out, but one thing I've done in the past is make a sudden U-turn and head the other direction for 30-60 seconds. Then make another U-turn and continue on your route. Usually that gives the other person enough time to get a gap and you can continue on your way. Obviously wouldn't work if you're running so much faster and catch up with them before long.
To everyone acting as though we have an obligation to be social butterflies while on a run, what would you think of someone doing a run alone at a gym treadmill, and out of 20 other open treadmills someone picks the one directly next to you and starts talking. Even if they don't talk, isn't it a little weird/annoying? Or if someone starts making chit chat while you're in the middle of squatting or doing pull ups, would that be totally cool? Why is it any different than the running situation?
Surprised anyone would be able to keep up with a LR member on what was no doubt a 47 mile @ 4 min pace easy run to be honest.
