How hard is it to be a teacher?

The most difficult aspect of teaching is that teachers are increasingly being judged for things that are way beyond their control. Teachers lost control of the profession long ago. State mandated curricula are handed down from far, far away from some unknown wizard from behind a curtain, most likely influenced by a myriad of consultants and publishers. A generation ago state ed departments had academic specialists who controlled curricula. They are all gone.

Being rated for factors beyond your control is very unhealthy. If you are young, jump ship. If you are mid-career, I feel sorry for you. Unless you teach phys. ed, or are a guidance counselor. Then you should stay put for as long as you can.

Things were out of hand at the last building referendum meeting. I was there, it would have blown your mind. Send me that #. And why would I want a divorce? I'm in on this action! I've even seen what she does until 5:30 & got pics of that too.

I never even met my HS CC coach. In fact, I'm making all of this up. (We're actually doing lines of coke off a hooker right now).

It doesn't. You could get it done in 35 hours and still have time to blo a student. Down south, less than 30, maybe 2 students. Plenty of non pedophiles in all states working in the 50-60 hr range too. But if you want to be a great teacher who lives up to the highest standards of the profession in a decent school you better get ready for some of that after hours action. Alright, i'm gonna sign off and let the trolls jerk off to the thought of my wife's school board meetings.

Went to a good school, majored in Math, and worked hard in my academics. Graduated and started teaching and coaching. Definitely has it's challenges but I can't fathom doing anything else.

Cliché as it sounds, I know I am making a difference and it makes up for the increased amount of $ I could get in basically any other profession. Although sometimes it is tough to think that I could make twice as much money as I do if I worked in the corporate world.

No way around it, if you do it right, you are putting in the hours. Summer is almost necessary because I don't know many teachers who could go 12 months out of the year! It is really an emotional drain and we need a recharge period. Getting kids and teachers to be engaged for an entire year would be a catastrophe.... there would be no teachers left to do the job, it'd be too hard.

But one major reason I chose teaching is I could coach! I am a good teacher, albeit not great. I put as much emotional and physical time as I feel is appropriate to (every teacher is different in this regard for better or worse) but I love my kids and try to get them to be challenged, engaged, learn and have a positive experience in the classroom. But the ability to coach is where I have the biggest impact on kids plus I am truly passionate about it! It is an area that gives me personal satisfaction and allows me to help students grow in what I believe is a positive way. I believe there are few professions that could allow me to coach so easily while giving me an internal sense of happiness.

But to be honest, teaching does allow for a lot of personal time that other professions don't. Getting out of work at 3 everyday (if you chose to stay away from coaching, extra curriculars, leadership, etc), long breaks, and summers off is VERY nice and can't be undersold. I can spend my time the way I want to and that is liberating! I chose to spend that time coaching and it is sweet to have the ability to chose what I do with my time. Pay is not great but I knew I wasn't going to ever be rich when I took the job....doesn't mean we shouldn't get paid more and doesn't mean teachers should be held to a lower bar in terms of professionalism and quality of instruction, just the reality of the job!

At the end of the day, I am a happy and fulfilled dude by most metrics! Just my two cents!

What if she has coaching duties?

How many sub 4 minute milers who work as teachers can you think of?

A tough gig. Grew up in va teach in Australia. Love it......7:45-5pm. Executive salary 117k with private coaching another 25k but feel I earn every penny. Not an easy job.. ..
