Cam Levins SMASHES 43 year-old Canadian record with a 2:09:25 !!!

Meaningless stat, but cant resist - Fastest marathon by an NCAA grad from this decade?

It was fun to watch. He looked great.

The psychopaths will ultimately turn this into a Rupp sucks thread, so just wanted to get this out there:

1. Levins was brilliant today. Patient and strong when it mattered in less than ideal conditions. Houle did a great job preparing Levins.

2. Salazar never coached Levins in the marathon (although he did run 27:09 for 10,000m). I think the NOPs record in the marathon speaks for itself.

3. Levins has a bright future. I think he can get down under 2:07 in the right race. Maybe faster.

Rupp sucks.

Is that true? That's a fun stat.

Would be interested in the lists for previous decades or half-decades; mostly predictable but I bet there are some fun surprises.

It isn't a talent thing, because it is not just Africans doing it. You have Rupp, Levins, Moen, Robertson twins, several Japanese all well under 2:10. Frustrating for American fans.

Americans aren't doing the fast long run. Robertson only runs 90 mpw, but can handle the demands because of the fast long run. I know he didn't perform as well as he could have today, but he's head and shoulders above other US guys aside from Rupp.

Someone should say a good word about Jerome Drayton: he won Fukuoka three times, Boston once, and came in sixth in the Olympics. He was no slouch.

Wonder if Drayton saw any of that? I think he lives right next to part of the course.

It's because of Strava. Too many runners not running for races, but to impress their followers. The best runners aren't on Strava. The wannabes, Walmsley's, etc..., are on Strava searching for kudos. Are Kipchoge and Rupp on Strava? Nope.

The world record in 1975 was 2:09.12, so Drayton was less than a minute off the WR. Had a full-time job, no sponsors.

Very happy Levin’s got it, but today WR is: 2:01.39

Cam Levins is a taller runner? Cam's listed at 5'10" and 143#. Galen Rupp is listed at 5'11" and Mo Farah is at 5'9". You make no sense at all.

Super cool! It seemed logical that the marathon would be his best event given his love for mega-mileage in college, but wow... such a fast debut is definitely shocking! It’s going to be a lot of fun to see what he can on a course like Berlin with more experience.

I also hope this motivates the US runners to get under 2:10... they can’t be happy about a Canadian wrecking them like this.

It’s also cool that letsrun seems to have forgiven him for going to the NOP dark side... fantastic debut and a golden opportunity to trash Al Sal! Letsrun will explode if Levins ever beats Rupp’s PR ;)

5’10 is pretty tall for an elite marathoner.

Is 1:05:12 2:06 pace? Look at his splits brother. He went out in the first 5k pretty quick but his first half was pretty reasonable. In contrast though Cam's first 5k was his second slowest of the race and he only split one really fast 5k.

You're right, his 1/2 split was not 2:06 pace. It was 2:10 pace, and he ran 1:05 / 1:09 --> 2:14, so still over-ambitious pacing to the half.

His silly first 5k was faster still, but even his pace from miles 3-13 was too quick for him to handle.
