Sounds like Fenway Park, can you imagine if they got rid of it? There would be an uproar.
Fenway's seats are painful to sit in, there were obstructions everywhere, and the bathrooms are gross. But people love it that way because it's historic.
Then for gods sake incorporate some of the old design features of the historic stands into the new stadium, but eliminate the bad sightlines and lack of facilities. That is what everyone who has ever been to Hayward would like to see. Why the hell does the new stadium have to look like some Qatar world cup soccer stadium?

Yes, but the track crowd (fans) do not want that. Matt Knight is a snore fest. And all the facilities across the river by Autzen are big glass and shiny. Even the jacqua student center sticks out like a sore thumb.

"Historic" Hayward Field is historic. However, the grandstands are NOT. They are crap, and should be modernized and replaced. The track has certainly been resurfaced since Pre ran it, without much controversy (as far as I can recall). So why all the fuss with the grandstands? The track, IMHO was more important to preserve than the grandstands...

Stadium looks cool... but it’s still in Eugene, Oregon so it is still difficult and expensive to get to from most of the United States. Bummer.

The problem with all the goings on with the hayward field situation is that no stadium can be built to optimize the experience of a 4000 person event

, 10,000, 12,000 and 30000 person event.
Style points aside, although i would prefer a more traditional look much like most of the recent baseball stadiums, it is impossible to satisfy the large range of crowd sizes.
The way i see it you need to build for 8000-12000 with the abilty to bring in temporary seats for the few times you need more. This is what they currently do.
Building for 30000 people is building for a one time event that wont come around for another 20-40 years. Doing this is really going to ruin the majority of events(dang near every single one). Go look at all the empty seats in large arenas for basketball, including ncaa regional games.
Again, i prefer a tradional look as it would fit the area better. However most importantly i prefer an environment that maintains the intimacy of the best track meets in the US (ncaa, trials, pre classic). These meets will be around at a rate of 60-100 times more than a once in lifetime WC.
It goes without saying that improving the facilities for athletes is a priority along with the fan experience.
I also dont inderstand how the current architechts and leaders havent confidently addressed what seems to be impossible (intimate experience for 8000 people and 30000 people and how this will be accomplished.
I dont get how bright people including lananna and phil knight are willing and wanting to sell out for the WC event at the expense of everything else

It's very clear that from the limited information out there and Vin Lananna's non-commital answers to John Anderson's questions during the NCAA broadcast that nobody has a clue what the final design will look like.
The project is a Phil Knight vanity project. Plain and simple. To the rich go the spoils, I suppose.

Demolishing the East Grandstands would be an abomination of the worst sort, and anyone who believes otherwise needs to take it up with my blacksmith. Additionally, if anyone know where I can find a decent hair jelly nowadays, it would be appreciated as the piggly wiggly down the street went out of business some time ago and I can't seem to find it in any of the newfangled stores nowadays. I am also concerned that there will not be adequate parking at the new facility for my buggy.
