The most entertaining part of watching people speculate on athlete salaries (besides they’re usually pretty far off) is they don’t know that base salary from a sponsor is only a part of a track athletes income.
Many make quite a lot more from appearance fees, speaking engagements, bonuses in the contract and prize $. Many athletes easily make 5-15k off one race. Medals and USA top 3s are worth hundreds of thousands. Keep speculating.

I believe this. I know of one runner (now retired) who made over $650,000 first year out of college after combining several income sources. This was a distance runner, NCAA winner, non-American.
I know how contracts work as I've been in Sports Marketing and an agent for the past decade, and a Silver is worth about $10,000 in that race, if you have a good agent. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Webb's first contract was $250,000 per year for 6 years. No way Wheating made close to that.

Trying to bully Berian was a bad idea. Bad publicity, bad strategy and bad juju, all of which will come home to roost for Nike.
How did things go for Murphy? It's almost like they were trying to ruin his career. So much for splitting 45...
Not every contract Nike does is the same. The no reductions for Wheating was Vin and Jeff’s doing.

Shalane got $100k+ appearance fee to run, $125k for the win, Nike bonus for world major win ($50k?), and her base salary. 15-20 Americans across all event groups are making a ton of money but the drop off is huge.
Track athletes are in a similar boat. More competitions with smaller prize money and appearance fees. Even people like Kendricks and Morris are making a ton.
Good facts. But do us regular folk really want to be in that boat? Live out your glory by 39 and then descend into obsolescence and motivational speeches? What on earth will Ryan Hall be doing at 50 aside from speaking weird-a-- Californian and pastoring once a week at his local church in Nocal?
