In general it is not a good idea to land heel first even when jogging as this is a breaking action.
Brace yourself for the insane shreiking of two dozen hobby joggin' heel strikers claiming foot strike doesn't matter.
+10 for predicting this!
I actually knew and DII All-American Steeplechaser who argued with a football coach in class. The football coach (Also a former track & field coach) said you should run on the balls of your feet. The All-American said you should run heel-to-toe! I was young and naïve in college when this happened and wanted to say that "you are both right but it depends on the speed you are running."
I know better now.
You will run more towards the heel if you run at a somewhat slow pace. Really the ideal for distance running is a mid-foot landing. But speed requires more of a forefoot landing. However I would think anyone who is running absolutely heel-to-toe all the time is asking for trouble. It might be that many, like my All-American friend do not realize how they land.
I agree that we all are different. Also research indicates that the way the foot lands is the ending result of a lot of other things we do with our body. People try hard to land a certain way by just adjusting how they land. We should be focusing on the hips, arm swing, and how our body is aligned.
The head should be centered. We should not be looking down when we run!
