Richard - I have a training log of Xolie Yawa and it makes pretty interesting reading. I unfortunatley dont have it with me but going from memory.
He was in fact a low mileage man - with a lot of emphasis placed on tempo runs which he did at least 3 to 4 a week ranging between 5km and 10km at his 21km race pace - so under 3min per km. He did one long run a week of around 25km. His traditional morning runs were about 12km.
So more or less 80 miles a week.
What must be noted though is that Yawa although internationally competitive probably had the talent if he upped to his mileage to become a world beater. He ran mid 27:00's for 10km and a 2:08 marathon which is world class but even at the time was a little short of being a world beater.
This approach to training is very common amoungst South African athletes which explains their lack of performance at the middle distance events. They are lacking quality on the lower end of the scale
