In my martial arts system, I was always #1 in the region for my age group.
That meant: #1 in sparring, #1 in freestyle, and #1 in kata (performing choreographed self-defense forms - it's hard to explain).
Then when I was old enough, I started practicing with adults in their late 20s, 30s, 40s. I didn't like the environment - I didn't fit in and I was still an awkward teenager. Yes, my instructors moved me into the adult section because I was the top ranking student in my class (the teenage section).
I don't know why I quit. But I think that when it got to the point that martial arts started to be something about wellness for the mind and body, I lost interest.
Besides, how many people do you know are black belts? Perhaps the title associated with being a black belt means nothing nowadays since it's all for entertainment. But it was 8 years of something that I hated, yet now I have it in me.
And by god, if that doesn't translate to other sports, then I am damned.
I have a third-degree black belt in aikido. It does not translate to running. You are damned.

I can do forward splits anytime because I have that flexibility. I can't do side splits.
When I swim my mile there are males who will try and keep up with me, but they cannot match my 14 strokes across the pool, and fins I wear.
They usually stay side by side,
I kind of feel like I'm in a Wrigleys Doublemint Bubble Gum commercial when they do that.
I was out on my after work hobby jog and a guy ran past me so fast I spun around like in a tornado.

So I was running on the bridge and making my speed up to 90% max and THIS GUY ran up right behind me and then outkicked me and kept running for like 200-250 meters until the end of the bridge. He didn't look back.
It was all so sudden. Usually when you run in Boston, you only see hobby joggers. So when he first surpassed me, I thought he was a hobby jogger.
I tried to match his speed, but then I noticed he was using his finishing kick. I'd like to say I specialize in the 800 meters and he definitely reminds me of a middle-distance runner.
Why would he go all out? Was it because he saw me trying to go "almost" all out? I never go all out unless it's on hills or on a very even surface. This was on the bridge between Boston and MIT/Harvard.
After I knew I couldn't match his pace, he was gaining distance fast - I just stopped. I relaxed my shoulders, stopped swinging my arm and then just walked at a 2mph pace.
Should I have challenged him? Should I have tried beating him? Should I have flailed my arms like Nigel Amos in the 800m race? Should I have unleashed my pure hatred and given my best?
The thing was, I don't know if he already ran 8 or 10 miles today. Because I already ran 5 miles before we crossed paths. If one of us beat each other and got a smug sense of winning, it wouldn't be fair because we'd have beaten each other on tired legs. I'd want to race knowing that we were on equal leg freshness.
Do you try to run past someone knowing they were already tired? Do you like showing off you 5 min pace compared to someone struggling to get a 7 min pace?
Do you let them out run you? Or do you challenge them? What happens at the end? Do you wave goodbye? Or nod them off? Because I know what a finishing kick is. He used it against me. Why am I a target?!

Lady here. I almost always take the bait unless the runner evidently better than me/clearly doing a workout - so legitimately just passing me or coincidentally going the same pace. It's easy to tell if someone is trying to pull a fast one because they will change their pace suddenly when they see you/hear you coming up on them and have insecure looking body language.
Let me tell you... it's one of the most satisfying things to mess with people on an easy run. There are lots of male rec runners out there who cannot fathom that I am faster than them, especially when they see my easy run pace (7:30-8:00 miles) and try to "challenge" me. Putting them in their place is hilarious. Throw in a nice gentle, but devastating 3-4' pick-up and listen to/watch the epic blow-up. They have no idea what's happening. The key is to never run so fast that you yourself seem out of breath, or make the pace change so abrupt that it is obvious that you're playing them.
After I am confident that I've utterly destroyed their ability to respond or dropped them, I'll coast back into my regular easy pace with a smile on my face. Mission accomplished.

Once, I lived in a nameless southern city which is not renowned for its talent. In a suburb of this city, there was a path that was 2.5 miles end-to-end which I routinely ran (sometimes multiple times), as an out-and-back would give you a flat and fast 5 miles.
I was about to move to a new city, and I was on one of my last runs ever on this path.
Important to the story is the fact that I had never been passed by another runner on this path, either, in the few years I had lived there.
So, I was on a leisurely run, around 8 minute miles. When I turned around at the halfway point, some guy comes out of nowhere and passes me. So, instinctively, I latched on to his shoulder and followed a few paces behind. I kept following for 2.25 miles, when I decided to pass him and kick it in.
I preserved my perfect record on the path, and I let him tow me along to a nice finish averaging under 6 minutes a mile.

Nah man. I don't race or surpass young runners especially if they're high schoolers.
It's just like how master runners on the roads always seem kind and acknowledge me.
But the LetsRun people here - it's nasty. Are runners two timers? Do they seem nice in appearance but secretly want to crush you?
Also I'm not the person spitting out words just like delusional and BPD. Just because trolls say whatever they want doesn't make it true.

And today I did challenge a 10k guy. He seemed in his late twenties early thirties. He was wearing a Brigham woman's hospital 10k shirt and this time I outkicked him past the stoplight.

I'm excited and afraid that if I do challenge a girl and try to outrun her, she'll beat me over 1-2 miles if the pace continues.
I don't mess with girls in Northeastern gear or BC shirts.
