I played football and became a good distance runner.
I think the initial training for football helped my running.
But any distance running didn’t help me with football.

That’s a good way to put it. You obviously can’t maximize both. I quit football cause we were getting crapped on every game, whether I played good or not, while I was a region and later state level contender in running.
I have dominant sprint speed and very solid spacial awareness (think prime centro/symmonds being in the right place right time) so I’ve always had really solid kicks. I attribute that to my training in football as a middle linebacker constantly has to be counting heads and reading plays.
