As an example, take a guy that can rep out 225 lbs on the bench press (not super heavy, but fairly so by runner standards). I'm wondering if there are examples where somebody of that stature can throw down a time in the mid 2 hour range or less.
I realize that build is not ideal for a distance runner, but there must be outliers. Have you seen any fast long distance guys that can lift crazy heavy weights in the gym? Or is that a rock solid oxy moron?
I know a guy who ran for the Air Force Academy years ago who could hammer out around 30 pull-ups and over 100 push-ups at a time. He curled and benched a fair amount, too.

I had a time of 2:40 in the Marathon. I was working construction as a laborer 50-60 hours per week while also running 100-110 miles per week. I was 6-3 and 192lbs.
I did not lift weights, but I remember picking up rolls of chain-link that were 8' off a forklift fairly easily and loading them in the back of a pickup truck which involved me lifting them over the tailgate. I found out later they weighed 280 pounds. I did not think much of it until the forklift guy said he never saw anyone do that before.
I always felt that my job hindered my running but looking back I think it helped me a couple of times when I performed really well in extreme heat.
Anyway, I think I would have run much faster if I did not have that job at the time.

Ouch!
James Nielsen did both "easily".
