who are you to speak for every stud collegiate runners? we can argue all day about what meets are important to athletes, but its a subjective one. what cant be argued is that true studs crave a big stage, and there are few non-ncaa meets bigger for a collegiate runner than penn/drake. you have a top notch competition, a national tv audience, tens of thousands in attendance, and agents/pro athletes every where. literally every other weekend on the calendar is for fast times, good weather, and empty stadiums.

I was just speaking to the quantity of warm ups, races and cool downs someone would have to go through for their team especially in less than ideal temps.

I have seen them too. And it's great to watch. But I can certainly understand why these sprint powerhouses would choose to stay in warmer climates and have a few less races over the weekend.

A lot of good sprint schools have gone to Penn to try get that that wheel and that watch.
Agreed, it's bad conditions to run in.
The weather is unpredictable and you get treated like cattle.
Easy to find better conditions for running.
But you cannot beat the energy there that you will not find anywhere else.
I can see Pat Henry being tired of the circus.
But the young runners haven't had to deal with that for 30 years in a row.

This^ Why don't they move these to separate weekends. Plus the college races are really an afterthought for both events. The high schools and pros get the crowds. Not to mention the weather is probably warmer down in LA. What I don't get is why make it an SEC only meet two weeks before SECs. Why not allow other schools in?

Agree with everything you said. Have jump and throw relays like some high schools meets have that total the scores of the 3-4 jumpers/throwers from each school. Those were awesome.
What a moron for thinking track is just for collegians. Penn and Drake are the cornerstones of our sport, which is for the participants. Fortunately, these two meets will be around and thriving long after that moron has moved on to boring his elderly companions at the old folks home about his coach days.
First of all, nowhere in that article did Coach Henry mention "destroying" the Penn Relays or Drake Relays. If you have ever been in the Texas A&M track offices and locker rooms you would know that they have a lot of Penn Relays championship wheels on the walls. Coach Henry has been bringing teams to Penn for a long time and has had a great relationship with Dave Johnson. He has said that the atmosphere at Penn is good for the sport. He just also thinks that trying different things is good for the sport. A few SEC schools not going to Penn or Drake is not going to "destroy" either meet. Those meets are bigger than a few teams.
More importantly, why do you single out Coach Henry and Texas A&M? What about the other SEC schools that aren't going? Arkansas, Alabama, LSU, Tennessee...? Why no link to their press releases about going to the SEC Relays? What about Baylor (not an SEC school) skipping the Drake Relays for the first time in forever to go to Texas Tech? Or, Nebraska? Florida is hosting a meet this week? How dare UCLA and USC dual the same weekend as Penn/Drake!!! Don't they realize they are "destroying" the meets and killing the sport?!?!
Where was the outcry when Vin started the Oregon Relays and it was initially on the Penn/Drake weekend?
I always find it amazing that people refer to Coach Henry as a "donosaur" when he is one of only a handful of coaches willing to try different things and to look at ways to make the sport more popular. You might not agree with his ideas, but at least he has some! Everybody likes what they are comfortable with and I guess Coach Henry likes to rock the boat a little bit. And, what does he have to gain personally from that? He has already won 36 national championships! Trying things that MIGHT make the sport a little more exciting or a little more relevant isn't going to make his teams any better or help him win more national titles. But, it might make the sport a little better for those young coaches coming up.
Truly much ado about nothing. The fact that LetsRun wants to make this a big deal and with such a misleading hyperbolic thread title tells me that it is either a slow news day or there is another agenda.

Face it. Of the non-LA relays, only Stanford is about college/elites. The rest are mostly filled with high school races. Penn is about Jamaican HS, Catholic HS, and NE HSs. Same regional focus for all of the non-LA-Relays. Thus you are bored watching slow HS races 85% of the time.

Pat made himself the target behind this movement away from Penn Relays with his comments. Just because he has a resume doesn't mean his bad ideas are above criticism.
There was outcry when Vin started the Oregon relays, particularly behind the goal to set the 4xmile record in "ideal conditions". If you will remember, Oregon and Villanova were a 3:55 anchor leg away from breaking 16 at Penn two years ago. Oregon came to their senses and they came back because they realized their athletes benefit from the competition and they get more east coast recruits.

The SEC is "weaker competition?" Maybe you should take a look at the national rankings and recent national results. A&M has plenty of Penn Relays championship wheels to prove that they fared pretty well at Penn Relays over the years.
My grandfather medaled in the sprints at Drake in the 1920s! We still have one of his medals. The idea that Penn and Drake, which have been institutions for a century or more, are bad for the sport is ludicrous. They are the most exciting thing we have going in the spring, prior to NCAA's. They get tens of thousands of spectators/athletes and news attention. They allow our athletes not at the Olympic level to see what it's like to compete before a football-size crowd. Or at least the closest thing we have to that.
