The world is a little darker today. This one hurt to hear about. Farewell Ed.

Had the privilege of meeting him a few times and, as great a runner as he was, he was an even better person. A real down-to-earth and humble gentleman. The world is poorer for his passing.

When asked what advice he had for other runners, he mused “I’m not sure what I’m doing is good for me, let alone anyone else.”

His 70-and-over world record converts to a 2:00:18.

I hope Ed is buried in "his" cemetery. And haunts it. You just know people are still going to see him doing laps.

Rest in peace, Mr, Whitlock. It was a pleasure and a privilege to have known you.

I hope there is a heaven. I don't know if there is; none of us do. But if heaven does exist then Ed is having a grand reunion with his wife and parents right now.

I must admit, I thought this as well. Maybe not the haunting part, but it would be fitting for him to rest there for all eternity.

Very sad news. It's a shame the world has to lose people like Ed.

This is such a shock. Ed seemed relatively immune to the ravages of aging.

Yes he was slowing down, but he was so far ahead of the average 86 year old and his race results inspired everyone to believe that perhaps immortality was possible.

Did anyone have a clue that he had cancer?

If he will be buried (perhaps in the cemetery where he ran all those hours) visiting his grave will be a pilgrimage that every runner should consider making.

He will be missed. Always enjoyed hearing about his running and about his background. Sad to learn this news.

The article about him in the NYT back in Dec 2016 talked a lot about his weight loss and also this shoulder pain that was keeping him from running??? That seemed odd to me.

I'm very sad to hear, Ed was definitely an inspiration. He felt like part of the LetsRun family. He will definitely be missed🙁...condolences to his family and friends.

Wikipedia says he set "36 world age class records on the road and track" -- but if you watch some of his interviews, he just seems like such a good, real, humble person. He was an inspirational man on many levels. RIP.
