The only thing dangerous here is drafting on the swim leg. Virtually all deaths in triathlons occur during the swim leg because race marshals can't see where everyone is because they are DRAFTING. Like this fellow:

Don't give me the BS about drafting in the bike leg being dangerous because it isn't and you have no evidence. Whereas, I have ample evidence proving drafting in the swim leg IS lethal.

1. Show me evidence that the fatality had anything to do with drafting. It is hard to watch that many people, whether they are swimming side by side or foot to hand. Urine idiot.

2. You have clearly never cycled. Drafting on a ROAD bike is routine and easy to do safely. Drafting on a TT bike is extremely dangerous, especially on the open road surrounded by competitors instead of teammates.

1. You are clearly obtuse and a square. What part of the article didn't you understand? He entered the swim with the other competitors and no one even realized he drowned until 45 minutes later when he didn't get to the bike. It doesn't take a genius to see that the drafting in the swim meant that race officials had no idea where anyone was nor could they see him drown. If triathlons were real time trials, reach swimmer would swim in individual lanes and at different times.

2. Tryathletes are already commonly drafting each other on TT bikes with no issues. I realize that you have denial issues greater than a Bradley Wiggins fan right now, but your failure to see the stupidity of triathlons is astounding.

The line lines aren't to prevent drafting. They're to help keep the water somewhat calm. Swimmers still draft, that's what they're doing when they get to one side of a lane.

And one reason amateur draft legal are rare is because unlike a team time trial, the riders have very little familiarity with each other. Put ten riders in line and there's bound to be a wreck. Someone is going to pump the brakes, sit up, not hold a line, or any other little change of pace and the chain reaction will put someone on the asphalt. Stories of such are heard at many races where the riders break the rule and get a train going.

It's not a 3-5% drag reduction in swimming like you claimed, it is 20% drag reduction which is huge.

And you are not going to get a 40-60% drag reduction in cycling unless you are riding into a headwind in a mass pack.

You are correct that drag reduction was 20% that led to a 3-5% performance improvement. I intended to write "performance improvement" not drag.

Yes, the 40-60% reduction in drag is in still air conditions. Did you not read that? I have seen it in track cycling with team pursuit where they are riding indoors.
